For all you PA residents....

OK, I'm considering moving to PA once I'm done with school. I have an 84 Camaro, and the AIR system and Cat have been removed. everything else (comp controls, EGR, Charcoal Canister, etc) is still there. Concerning inspection, I know I'd likely need a Cat. Here's why I question whether I need AIR or not (Smog pump, tubes, etc).

I've read on the origional options chart, and emissions equipment was a 300 and some dollar option. Maybe that was because of Canadian cars? But I wonder if it was an option if that becomes a loophole.

I also have a family friend in PA with a 91 GMC Sierra, 7 years newer. It didn't come from the factory with a smog pump (the bracket was never tapped for the bolts), therefore they don't require it on his truck.

Taking the above two into account, could I get away with saying there never was a smog pump on my car? there aren't any brackets left to prove otherwise. Anyone in PA (Danville area, specifically) running withour AIR? I don't think that's an area requiring a sniffer, but it's at least visual.

I don't have a problem putting a Cat back on, but if I have to track down all the parts, and deal with the engine bay, etc, etc, etc, I'd be better off selling it and buying an older car without AIR. I'd really like to put headers on the Camaro next spring, but that would be another issue I'd have to deal with if it came down to moving.

I live in MI now, no inspection, but now it's become something to think about. :/

Sorry this is so long, but I'd like to plan accordingly when I pull it out of storage next spring.

Re: For all you PA residents....

Hey F41

I am from PA and the rules in PA are that if it had it from the dealer then it is supposed to be there. That being said if you go to a local mom & pops to get your car inspected they most likely will not say anything about a missing smog pump on that old of a car. If you take it to a big chane type garage then they will not pass it.
But put a CAT on it at least and I think you should be ok. It also depends on the county that you live it. I live in Adams county and we do not have to have the emissions sniffed like other countys.

Hope this helps.
Welcome to PA

Re: For all you PA residents....

what county are you moving to, or what city?

there are laws in which if you drive less than 5000 miles a year you dont have to have emissions checked and will pass without any of that stuff. thats how my 401 twin turbo motor passes with turbos out the hood and everything.

Since your car is over 25 years old you may not need to do the sniffer test. Beginning 2011 vehicles 1975-1985 only need gas cap test and visual inspection according to code, even the pittsburgh clean air regions which are the 3 or 4 counties surrounding Pittsburgh..so if the engine bay is clean a small shop may not notice the missing equipment. If you just place everything in there and "hook it up" but not necessarily works you can pass.

Re: For all you PA residents....

Yeah, I was aware of the 5k rule; this is my first winter storing it, so I'll have a better idea after next summer how many miles a year I'll be driving it.

It would be hard, unless you really looked at it, to tell that there used to be a smog pump (too bad I threw it out, though). I guess I could always take it out there next summer when visiting friends and find out; inspection's only 20 bucks.

The area would be Snydertown, in the Danville/Shamokin/Sunbury area of Northumberland county. very rural, so I'm not incredibly worried, but would like to know ahead of time. Thanks a bunch, guys.

Re: For all you PA residents....

Sorry to burst your bubble but you will probably fail without all the factory equipment. I went to several "mom and pop" places and they dont know the laws at ALL in the non sniffer areas. I had different wheels and the one place I went wouldnt inspect me because they said you are not allowed to have different wheels on your car when all the code says is that you have to have the proper size tire on the wheel you have on the car. Also they gave me crap about not having the air tubes on the headers and no air pump. This was Susquehana country and they do not have the sniffer at all but you still have to pass a visual. I am (almost) glad I moved back to jersey. they dropped the safety inspections and there is no visual inspection now, they just look to see if you have a cat and then you have to pass the sniffer, no more dyno test on the cars.

Well, I guess I could always add the stuff from a junk yard if it came down to it; I've been to the shops in the area and they know what they're doing. I'm not as worried anymore. like I said, I'll see how many miles a year I'm driving it now that I have another daily, I may not even need inspection. either way it's at least another year and a half from now, plenty of time for the law to change. Yeah, right, it's PA

Re: For all you PA residents....

You can always register it as a classic and that will let you skip the smog sticker. You'd still need the safety inspection though, and it limits how much you are "supposed" to drive it.

Never thought the US of A got strict laws transferring cars from one state to another. But its a good thing to note though. We dont have those in the Philippines.
