Re: Jegs/Summit Dual Exhaust Kit Install

This is similar to how my car is ran, except I had an exhaust shop fabricate it. I went with 2.5 pipes, Magnaglow Spun converters and Dynomax bullets.

Yeah, looks like it. They should fit ok. not sure about that short bent piece though. It looks like it is meant to go under the OEM single pipe exhaust, and it may not clear 2 pipes there. Otherwise it should fit fine. If you are having an exhaust shop or mechanic weld it in, it should not be a problem for them to weld in a straight piece in place of it.

The add on piece wont fit on the passenger side. I couldnt even get it on with my previous single pipe setup

Then they should fit just fine. There should be plenty of room along the pinch weld for those. Give me the outer dimensions of the tube for the passenger side and I'll measure the clearance tomorrow and let you know.

Re: Jegs/Summit Dual Exhaust Kit Install

It would have been a lot easier with a lift or at least in a garage big enough to get all 4 wheels off the ground at the same time. That being said, it wasn't bad at all. Finding clearance over the rear axle was tough and I'm going to have to redo that part of it this winter. The outer pipe is low enough that the axle hits it pretty hard over large bumps. I can hear it thumping in the car and the pipe is more of an oval than a circle now

As far as leaks, I haven't seen or heard any evidence of any leaks.

The only other problem I have had is with the passenger's side tailpipe. Because I didn't leave the end of the U-turn piece very long I have had issues with the clamp loosening up and the pipe slipping down. I even blew that connection apart twice when I really stomped on the gas while it was loose. I fixed that problem by welding the connection and I also used a hanger to secure the pipe to one of the bolts that holds the rear impact bar in place.

It's an actual kit that includes all the bends and piping. You supply the headers, mufflers, and tips(if desired). Cats are not included, and I didn't install them since my Camaro is emissions-exempt. I don't remember the actual part number anymore, but its listed on both Jegs and Summit if you search for an exhaust kit for an 85-90 Camaro/FIrebird with a 5.0L engine. For whatever reason, it is listed as only being for those years and that engine. It will fit a 350 with no changes as well all years of thirdgens. The only thing it won't fit is the 2.8/3.1L V6 and the old Iron Duke engines. It could probably be modified to fit them though.

Re: Jegs/Summit Dual Exhaust Kit Install

i tried putting this in on ym car today... i have stock iroc 16" rims... the long pipe that comes from the driver side header hit the tire and the wheels were straight, then i tried to get the other one to go on next to it and they just didnt fit right...
its frustrating... and i sucks because i was looking forward to true duals... but i cant afford to be modifying it being that i need it for a daily driver...

sorry to rant but i had to let it out...

At the moment, its not. The Camaro is in the garage on jackstands getting a 4thgen posi disc rear with 3.73's from an S10. I also have some previously undiscovered rust holes to patch before it goes back on the road for the summer.

The exhaust hasn't really given me any problems that weren't of my own making except for one. One of the over-the-axle pipes is a little too close to the axle and the axle was hitting it over large bumps. It crushed the pipe to about half its diameter. I am missing the bump stop on that side so once I replace that I am hopeful it will cure the problem. If not, I will have to rework that pipe.

The only other problems I had involved the muffler clamps not holding the tailpipes on well enough and they would work themselves loose over time. I solved that a while back by doing 2 things:

1 - I fully welded the exhaust except in 2 places. Where it bolts to the headers, and right before it goes up and over the rear axle. I used stainless steel band clamps from Summit in front of the rear axle.

2 - I fabbed up some hangers for the tailpipes. I welded a standard parts-store rubber-and-steel exhaust hanger to the top of each tail pipe and then bolted it to one of the lower bolts that mount the rear impact bar to the rear subframe of the car on each side.

I ran into the same problem with my stock 15" rims. That's what caused a lot of the modifications I had to make to the kit. I basically had to completely reshape that part of the pipes. I understand about not being able to have the car down for an extended period of time. Its about the ONLY good thing about winters here in PA. It gives me 5-6 months straight so I can do major work/overhauls on my Camaro.

There are 2 loopholes in pa state emissions inspection laws.

The first is that cars registered as classic or antiques are exempt from emissions inspections.

The second is if you have the car registered normally, you must have it registered in your name for at least a year AND drive it less than 5k miles per year.

The loopholes also allow you to remove the smog pump, and change a car that was originally fuel injected to a carb. Its how I was able to pull the V6 and drop in a carb'd V8.

I only drive the car from April to October and only put about 3k on it each summer. Well, I did till I drove it with the timing advanced too far last summer and it started knocking bad.
