If it is from a LS1 car, where the pipe connects to the cat will have to be tweaked, sins LS1s exhaust basically comes down in a true dual style, before merging.
In all 4th gen cat back, the hanger rods will hafta be tweaked, since they are all a bit different, but thats not a big issue.
I have a LS1 cat-back on my 87 GTA....

Loudmouth here too
I have a custom Y so I just fitted that to the catback. All mounting points were changed. I used universal hangers (long rod) and welded a flat piece with a hole in it so I can bolt/unbolt the system should I decide its not cool anymore
Yours wont be a bolt-in deal unless you fab it to be so

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
If you get the 4th gen's little hanger inserts, you can insert them into your thirdgen and the rear part of the cat back will bolt right up. The passenger side front mount is the same on both pretty much...atleast on the LT1 version. Maybe thats why I didnt get the LS1 version I cant recall.
I got a magnaflow kit for an LT1...which was a mistake. Because I ended up having to weld hangers to my tail pipes, when I could have just gotten the 4th gen version and bolted it up.
Here is how the hangers will transfer over...
4th gen outer piece. There are 3 of these.
Chassis inserts.
Openings under the thirdgen.
You snake them in from the side.

Anyone have an answer here. I have a 4th gen Borla, and when I mocked it up and it looks like the cat conection is not even close. Am I missing something? Thanks for your time.

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
And you say "4th gen"...You should say "LS1" or LT1", as they are 2 different setups/ LT1=practically a drop-in. LS1s need the tweaking.

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
Sorry, it is for a 94 Camaro, so an LT1. I was hopping that some one had some pics or a better explanation as to how they did the tie in to the cat. So I can have all the parts when I go to install it. You know a pic is worth a 1000 words!

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
Guys- got to this party kinda late hopefully this will help you or anyone else working on this. Just installed an 02 SS factory take off exhaust on my 89 RS LO3.
1) Swapped the 89 LH tailpipe hanger to the RH side.
2) Installed a boneyard 98-02 LH tailpipe hanger on the LH side
3) Cut the first 24" off the original cat back exhaust for the cat connection.
4) Took this piece of pipe to the parts store and bought an adapter to go from this pipe to the fourth gen intermediate pipe ($4).
5) Mocked the system up under the car (note the RH tailpipe mount needs to be bolted through the square hole on the factory tailpipe)
6) Final trimmed the 24" original pipe, and welded it together.
To go a bit further the fourth gen exhaust I used had been cut off the original car just in front of the rear axle.
1) I made two flanges from 1/8" stainless plate (think header collector)
2) Welded these to the ends of the two pipes.
3) This enabled me to remove the exhaust for welding, and remove the complete system at any time without cutting or dropping the rear axle.
Hope this helps!

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
The search button saves the day again!! I was just about to make a thread asking about the swapping of 4th gen catbacks into 3rd gens and here it is!
So based on what was said, I should get one from an LT1 car instead of the LS1 cars right? Does it really bolt up in just a couple hours? My stock cat back has a few large dents in it and two tiny holes (tip of a pen) so I've been looking into exhaust upgrades lately. Is $300 a lot to pay for a used Borla catback? Is an electronic cutout even worth it or would you lose backpressure or something and it would be useless?
Mike

Re: 4th gen exhaust on 3rd gen. help please
Just FYI:
There are three distinct versions of 4th Gen Exhaust. Trust me, I've owned a few.
"93-95 LT1 Single Cat
'96-97 LT1 Dual Cat
'98-02 LS1 (Dual Cat)
There are minor differences within the LS1s' forward of the cats as well, but for our purposes, make sure you know which Cat-back system you are talking about, because they are all quite different.

So what we need is the 93-95 version? Ok... That helps narrow down the list of possible donor cars.
