Hedman 68470 and 17470
Hey folks, just ordered the hedman shorties and y pipe to replace the pacesetter junk that i put on the car when i was young and dumb...
anything special i need to worry about?
car is 84 350 5 speed has 3 in catback already

The y-pipe is only 2-1/2" after the two sides join. Chopping that off and joining the two sides with 3" pipe would be a performance improvement.

i read that and plan to,
side note, with all the 3 inch catbacks out there, i wonder why almost all header y pipe combos end in 2.5 in? i probably can answer my own question with the fact that stock type cats are 2.5 in
anyhow, can't wait to ditch the pacesetter stuff, at 8 years old its rusty ugly and has been patched in a couple places already

FYI..
well apparently the 68470 headers do actually come with a ball & socket style connection now, the y pipe for that is 17478 NOT 17470 as summits website directed me to, upon calling i was told it is a web error and he is submitting it for correction
they are being good about it tho, the pipe is about $20 more which i have to pay but they are picking up the overnight shipping
as for the parts the headers appear to be a solid piece we i just hope they fit well

Thanks firechicken for posting this info. Unfortunately I found it a day too late. I received the 17470 today with my 68470. (I got the two part numbers off an older thread I had read)
Now to play the waiting game again for the 17478 to get here.

you might have the older flanged style, the newer style is ball and socket. 17470 = for flanged. 17478 = for ball and socket

yeah it seems its been a recent change, apparently all their headers are ball and socket now.... i was skeptical at first as it doesnt appear that it would seal well....but they work great, i have a slight fitment issue with the y pipe hitting the fender bolt as it passes but i think i just need to spend more time aligning things a little better

it isn't a recent change, as far as i remember about a year ago they were making them ball and socket. it also depends on who you bought it from, they might have had an older flange style sitting on the shelf and sold those to you. they switched over to the ball and socket because it eliminates the possibility to blow out a gasket, because it doesnt require one, also a ball and socket seal better anyway... as long as they are in good shape.

Well that's where I'm confused. Mine is ball and socket and I definitely have the 17470 y-pipe. I bought it from Jegs in December of last year. Didn't put them on till January though.

thats not possible unless you cut off the collectors from the y pipe, and put on the socket flange that is supplied with the headers,

I used this setup back in '02, and decided the whole setup was a mistake. The 3" collectors were too big, the 2" pipe under the oilpan was too small, and spark plug access was horrible. Yes, it's about the cheapest option, but I'd suggest returning it all and going with the Hooker 2055 setup or the near-identical offering from MAC Performance.

personally i think plug access is great , second its a 2.5in pipe not 2
and bang for the buck bolt on install you cant beat it,

Hooker 2055 has 3" collectors also
firechicken addressed those issues
Hooker 2055's are double the price
If I'm not mistaken don't all 2055 setups have AIR tubes, now there's the added hassle of cutting them and capping them off.
-I haven't installed them yet but for the price I'll be sticking with these and I'm sure it will be a big improvement to my current log style manifolds.

I bought these used from a guy, with the 3 bolt flange. Old style. The flange is flimsy and warped easily and blew gaskets like a kid with a cold blows a hanky.
I used the flowmaster 3" ball and socket kit to upgrade it. Ball and socket is the way to go.
As far as spark plug access, I think it's fantastic. These headers are the main reason why when I read "how do you get to the spark plugs on a 3rd gen?" on this forum I get confused. How can you NOT get to them? The only easier cars is inline 4's with the plugs at the top....
Anyway, i'd recommend them.

i bought that setup with the ball socket style two years ago used the headers for 5 minits to break in motor pulled it sold car still got headers and y pipe repainted headers all i did was burn off the paint i got it for like 300 i think is that right i was thinkin bought puttin on my gta i gave to my son is it worth it its all originall car all the air pump ans stuff or should i leave it stock how much a pain to pull that air stuff and old exaust

I also bought the 68470 with the 17470
The next car is getting the Hooker shorties without air tubes and WITH the O2 bung already on them...
2055-1HKR (ceramic) and they come with the Y-pipe and it already has 3" collector
2055HKR (painted)
The only issue I had with the Hedmans, was that I had to unbolt the driver side motor mount and lift the motor like 3" to get the header to go in. What also sucks is that I had NO spark plug problems until AC Delco changed the design of the R45TS plugs and made them about 1/4" longer... now I have clearance issues with the socket when doing my plugs...

well, the guy at Hooker said they didnt have the A.I.R. tubes, but the pictures look like they do.... ???????????
