High flow Catalytic Converter. Worth it??
I was thinkin about buying a magnaflow hi flow catalytic converter for my car. Unfortunatly this is North East ohio and i have to emissions check the car for 5 more years (geez only 5 more years til an 88 is classic, whoa lol). also the converter on the car now is original and could replaceing anyway but just wanted to know if its worth paying more for a hi flow vs. a stock replacement.
What kind of power increase did anyone notice??
And change in exhaust note??
Thanks guys

There is no such thing as a "HIGH FLOW" cat. They are all made with a monolythic core now. (no more baffle type) So they all flow well.
Here in Ca. they have made Magnaflow remove that from their label.

No change... unless your old one is plugged up. Which they often are: the material eventually breaks up in there, and turns sideways or whatever, and gets stuck, and blocks the flow. Sometimes it even breaks out of the back end and gets in the muffler and plugs that up too.
Your original one is the monolythic type. Looks like a fine honeycomb, looking through it. You can see right through.
They're so cheap nowadays, it's almost as expensive to buy a piece of straight pipe. Go ahead and get one such as a Catco etc., it won't hurt your car's performance at all. Even if you have a hollowed out one now. You won't be able to tell the difference.

Be careful on the type that you buy. Some of the aftermarket stuff, or
"universals" have low efficiency (~70%). Check the MFG specs before buying.
Certain cats. may cause headaches when you roll up for the e-test.

I'm a Florida driver here, I had mine cut out and replaced with a straight pipe as we have no inspections down here, no difference in drive or performance. Andrew

Re: High flow Catalytic Converter. Worth it??
Geez, yea i was lookin at direct fit Magnaflow at for the car since they arnt to expensive (like 115 or somethin) but since there is really no difference anymore in regaurds to flow i may just see what my dad can get a service replacement for (he runs the service dept. at a GM dealer).
The car now has 61k on it and im basically tryin to get the car in the best mechanical shape possible some im also doin plugs/wires/cap & rotor etc. the cat is also on the list
Hey Dyno Don
U mentioned that cats are no longer baffled. does this mean that the stock one on my car is baffled and opposed to the monolythic core??
Thanks

When the exhaust shop installed my catback and hi-flow cat they never hooked up the O2 thing that comes out of the cat...does this mean that my cat isn't "hooked up"?
