exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

got pulled over at a road block in wayne NJ.... for not haveing my front plate on my front bump(it was in the windsheild). as he walks me over lol he askes "wat kinda mufflers are those" i said loud ones. he comes back wit a ticket for my front plate....2nd one i got in a month. and says "your exhaust is too loud for new jersey" i laugh and say i havent had a problem for 2yrs wit it on and he says "well... u got away wit it for 2 yrs and also the exhaust tips have to pass the rear axle" i says thanks. and as i pull away i give him a nice lil rev for good luck.

exhaust is headman longtubes, headman header extensions, 3" summit Xpipe and 3" dual force mufflers with turndowns. its loud but its not like a frigin harley! or my bros 68 vette with a 509 merlin and 4" ceramic side pipes. cops just need to find something better to do and actually protect something or catch someone doing something maybe and earn there pay... lol sry i get pulled over alot! just though i would post this so be weary in NJ

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

I've gotten pulled over here in Illinois for my exhaust too. I just went to the States Attorney and had the ticket dropped. It is a little obnoxious sounding (if you're old), but I just love easing into the gas of my 550 HP SBC. I have Hooker LT's, dual 3" pipes dumping into a pair of Spintechs with turndowns just before the rear axle. It's melodic harmony to my ears, I definately have no need for a radio.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

Yep, I even drove the Camaro when I went to see the States Attorney. Told them it had two mufflers that were street legal and I brought it. They weren't too interested in going out to the parking lot and crawling under my car. These people are white collar, they're not gonna roll around under a hot rod to check the mufflers. It was easier for them just to drop the ticket and go on.
----------
Oh, BTW, next time a cop pulls you over and asks about your mufflers, tell him the type of mufflers you're running. The "loud ones" response probably didn't help matters any. Just my .02

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

PA township police did it to me, all I had was a flowmaster on a 305. I called summit got a statement that it was 50 state legal, and a signed statement from the state police, and a mechanic. got thrown out in court big time. Judge laughed and got pissed at the township for harrassment as I was in there before with another bogus charge of burnouts when all they seen was the rubber not the actual car doing it. Now ocean city was a little different $70 and the cop was 2 cars behind me LOL!!! If I knew it was that cheap I woulda did another one for good measure.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

lol i said the loud ones cuz he was only giving me a ticket for the front plate and not the exhaust. if he gave me a ticket i would of had told him... "the inspection place didnt seem to have a problem with it" im eventually gona have the tubes running to side exits infront of the rear wheels... is that legal?

haha 70$ for a burnout! thats not too bad. i like to give them alil chirp when i leave the cop...if he gives me a ticket. i kno i only get tickets bc of the car i drive... and that sucks. the diff is that im running 3" duals with xpipe and 3" dual force mufflers with turndowns.... no cats no smog nothing so mines not exactly legal. but in 4 yrs my car will be a classic then they cant say SHlT!!!!

Do you have any pics of the pillar pod gauges. Trying to get ideas / looks for my future upgrades.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

not an exhaust kit. parts are as listed, from summit.
headman long tubes 6480 i think
headman 3" header extensions from summit
summit universal 3" xpipe kit
force 3" performance mufflers from summit
not sure of the part #'s, mufflers where 34$ each, xpipe was 90$ header extensions were 25$ and headers were 130$, total is 320$ thats cheaper than a catback lol and its all mandrel bent and can support over 600hp.

i built the exhaust ,myself sitting on my back with the car on jackstands. its loud but its not annoying or like glasspacks/harleys. i'll post pics later of the pillar for u.

Wow sounds like u guys have problems with the cops. I am a correction officer. So i feel where u guys are coming from about cops. They harassed me b/c i had glasspacks on my truck that i had back in the day and it was legal. It was thrown out of court b/c the ordinance is just to wide to eliminate loud exhaust here in kansas. i just put a new setup that is a lil milder they are turbo mufflers aftermarket jcwhitney so lets see if they start bitching.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

I have a high flow cat with a single exit Flowmaster Super 40 dumping behind the rear bumper. I also have never had a front plate in the near 2 years I've had this car. It's pretty loud. I've been pulled over once for excessively accelerating and speeding (took it WOT to the top of 1st and 2nd in a 45mph zone) and he was cool about it and let me go. Didn't say a word about the exhaust or the front plate, just told me to slow down.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

yea i have your setup on my 86 TA with a 305TPI, 350tpi aftermarket cam, brand new motor rebuilt heads etc, it has edelbrock TES headers and ypipe, highflow cat and a flowmaster single exit 40's muffler, sounds good. better than the dual setup i think. my cars a good bit louder lol ur just lucky u got away... i would have surely gotten a ticket in ur situation.

firebird896, no prob, do u still need a daytime pic? i got mine from jegs i think, its an autometer piece it was cheap i think like 30$ good fit too, ur gona have to screw it in tho... i tired super sticky heavy duty double sided tape and it kept poppin off, that tape was rated to like 5 pounds lol. now u just gotta get the gauges and wire them up. also i have another trans temp gauge under the dash its a cyberdine electronic. but im modding the air vent (above the radio the 2 vents there) and putting in a stewart warner trans temp in there with an angle ring, should clean it up and look very nice.

Customblackbird, what's a force muffler? My system is exactly the same as yours except for Spiralflows under it. I'm curious to hear yours... any clips?

Of course, mine's a lowly 305 TBI for at least a couple more weeks...

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

its an offroad muffler, not legal. its a free flowing 3" thats all.
my tone will be diff then yours. the spiral flows are loud, i believe mine have a deeper mellow tone bc there not like a glasspack/sprial flow. yours is a 3" system? witout cats etc? yours has gotta be loud... come to nj and see if u get pulled over? yea i cant wait to drop in the 383 and see how it sounds

u can look them up from jegs... not sure about the part number. i'll prob post a sound clip soon

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

Hope this all works for you if you have question PM me sometimes i only come on the site once a week.

Bro I live in NJ I have checked out everything about NJ exhaust laws. The basics, you are in the wrong, It is illegal to have true dual exhaust set up in NJ. You must stay within 95 dB at 2,000k rpm at 40 ft away from the rear of a car. This is a CA standard is is suppose to be meet by any exhaust company that sells street exhaust and street mufflers. Not race mufflers. The cop does have to prove your car is to loud with a dB meter. You can fight the ticket in court and win. I had a family friend who did with his F-150. But you do have a true dual exhaust so if they were to check that out you are in the wrong. You also have to have you muffler tip end after the last window of the car that rolls down. On an F-body that would be the axel so to be safe you have to go to the end of the rear bumper. You might think well on a pickup truck that would mean you could end you exhaust at the begining of the bed, basically you have to go to the end of the bed. Second you are not alound dual cats on a car in nj. you have to go with a Y pipe into a single muffler and out into dual or single mufflers. I got pulled over in Roxbury Township for my V6 being to loud I told the cop this and because I threw all that at him. he let me go, not every cop out there knows alot about cars, but at the same time there are a few that are smart at what they can give you a ticket for. A cop just cant say your car is to loud there is no such rule that says a person can say your car is to loud. And so goes with state inspection you wouldnt pass state inspection you would have to take it to a friend at a shop and have them pass the car for you.

And for your good here is this

current NJ law:
N.J. Stat. @ 39:3-70 (2002) [Mufflers]

Every motor vehicle having a combustion motor shall at all times be equipped with a [muffler] in good working order and in constant operation to prevent [excessive or unusual noise and] annoying smoke, AND NO PERSON SHALL MODIFY THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OF A MOTOR VEHICLE IN A MANNER SO THAT THE EXHAUST SYSTEM EMITS IN EXCESS OF NINETY-FIVE DECIBELS AS MEASURED BY THE SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS (SAE) STANDARD J1169 ( May 1998 ). IT SHALL NOT BE A VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION UNLESS PROVEN BY PROPER AUTHORITIES THAT THE EXHAUST SYTEM MODIFICATION RESULTS IN NOISE AMPLIFICATION IN EXCESS OF NINETY-FIVE DECIBELS UNDER THE PRESCRIBED SAE TEST STANDARD.

A COURT MAY DISMISS ANY ACTION FOR WHICH A PERSON IS PROSECUTED FOR OPERATING A VEHICLE IN VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION IF IT IS FOUND THAT THE DEFENDANT HAD REASONABLE GROUNDS TO BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT OPERATED IN VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION.

[and] n No person shall use a [muffler] cut-out, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.

Daskinnyguy... lol thanks for all that info... i already knew the laws and yes i know im in the wrong but if i was flooring it around town and making a rutkiss i would have no prob with a cop pulling me over and tellin me my cars too loud.... is the fact that they have road blocks setup and they look for anything to give u a ticket... thats just ridiculous. crusing my car is not that loud thanks to the Xpipe... i would however like to get a decibel reading so i know and can brag alil.

i feel as if im being profiled just bc of the way my car looks. i have yet to make it through a road block with out a prob lol. as i said before i have many friends that are cops and they even say its just the cops are @ss's. and yes i got one of those cops who knew alil something about cars... unless he went back to his patrol car and looked up the laws... which i wouldnt put it past him.

seems to me that the cops have way to much time on there hands... and should prob protect something or patrol something instead of hasseling regular ppl doing nothing wrong. sometimes i wish i had diplomatic immunity so i could tell him to blow himself

hmm, i haven't had any problem with cops around my area(camden county). When i have my windows down at night i can hear the sound from my car echoing off houses. Not to mention I'm one of those people who rev under an over pass.

Its just a revenue thing dude. They have to pay the bills somehow. Most average people wouldnt think twice about the law, they would just pay the ticket and call it a day.

My town up here in CT has taken to arresting people to make money, and giving expensive tickets. In the summer, a bunch of us like to go donw to this certain Dunkin Donuts and get a coffee, and sit on the benches for a little bit, or chill by our cars in the parking lot. The cops every year have always kicked us out after midnight when the store closes.

Last summer, they started arresting anybody in the parking lot that was in there car, or standing around. One night, they arrested 3 people for criminal trespassing, and gave another 50 people simple tresspassing tickets for $100. Thats alot of profit for one night. Then they started coming and arresting earlier and earlier, and even giving the old people (like 40-80 years old on harley's lol) that are there ALL DAY tickets. Old people always go to D&D. Finally, my buddy dave got arrested at 4pm when he was getting a coffee after school got out. They put his coffee on the ground, arrested him, and impounded his car. At 4pm lol.

So your roadblock problems are not a big deal. You drive an f-body, they turn heads. Thats what happens. Maybe the cop liked these cars in highschool, but never could afford one so he had a grudge or something.

I don't live in NJ, but here in FL I got pulled over for revving my engine. The cop said it was "exhibition of performance" which falls under the drag racing category. Luckily I didn't get a ticket.

my tone will be diff then yours. the spiral flows are loud, i believe mine have a deeper mellow tone bc there not like a glasspack/sprial flow. yours is a 3" system? witout cats etc? yours has gotta be loud... come to nj and see if u get pulled over? yea i cant wait to drop in the 383 and see how it sounds

The X-pipe mellows it out. IT's barely louder than my flowmaster at idle and quieter when cruising at highway speeds. (At least... it is inside the car. )

But under load at 2000 RPMs that suckeri s loud, yeah. It's loud, but usually you can still talk over it so it's not that loud to me.

haha yea im one of those guys as well. i love scaring ppl when i drive under and overpass.

wow he got a ticket at 4pm... what was he doing? can they even do that? i mean if he was just drinking coffee then... im not sure i understand. i woulda resisted and beat that cop. i mean if ur gona arrest me then its gona be for something good. if i was in a hybrid prius i wouldnt have to worry. they pulled some kid over next to me in his hummer 3 bc his stock tints where to dark... lol should heard his mom BlTchin in the passenger seat.

i said the muffers are loud ones... after he gave me a ticket lol u cant give me 2 for the same thing.

i had no idea that reving an engine or burning out is the same thing as racing! SHlT if i get pulled over after reving my engine... his @ss is gona have to catch me first.

the xpipe really does mellow it out. but yea i kno about it getting louder at 2000... mines more like 2300 u can hear the xpipe lol i put loud exhaust on my car bc i usually dont wanna hear what the person next to me is sayin

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

Since the owners of the Dunkin Donuts dont want us "deliquents" in their property, they have put up signs that say it is illegal to sit in your car without driving. That basically gives the cops permission because they also have a letter from the owner saying that. And the cop actually told us we fit his description of a deliquent.

As for getting pulled over for the stock tints, it happens. Also, remember a few years back, when Nissan started putting those big chrome taillights on the altimas? The cops had a hayday giving people illegal taillight tickets in my town, untill the dealership informed the chief otherwise lol.

lol i guess enjoying coffee in your car and not getting into an accident while driving and drinking coffee makes me a deliquent as well.

ha i hope nissan or the township gave all those ppl refunds, or a free kick to the cops nuts lol

My friends buddy got pulled over one day because he was driving without a hood on the car. Cop said it's illegal to drive without a hood. So my friends buddy asked if he could see where it states in the book (forgot the name) it says driving without a hood is illegal. Well, cop didn't want to do that so he let him go.

Gotta know the law in order to know when a cop is BS you.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

I went through New Jersey inspection with a stock L98, TBI injection, stock exhaust and a magnaflow muffler, and they gave me hell for it.

Solution: Get a mechanic friend to put it through as an '01 Civic. lol

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

I find these noise laws complete BS. If a cop ever gives you a ticket for loud exhausts, take him directly to court. Any lawyer with half a brain would get that thrown out. I imagine the convo would go something like this:

Lawyer: You say that my client's car is excessively loud?

Cop: Yes.

Lawyer: How loud?

Cop: Around 90dB.

Lawyer: Approximately 90 dB or exactly 90 dB?

Cop: Approximately. I measured with a Decibel meter from 25 feet.

Lawyer: Exactly 25 feet?

Cop: Around 25 feet.

Lawyer: So you're telling me that my client's car is approximately 90 dB, measured from approximately 25 feet? And the law states that the highest legal limit is 95 dB when the engine is revving at exactly 2,000 RPMs? Was my client's car revving at exactly 2,000 RPMs?

That ticket would be taken away.

Re: exhaust thats too loud for NJ! lol

u gotta be careful with nj cops... they really are losers. my friends thats a cop in randolph NJ says that a cop can pull u over and can give u 4 tickets for absolutly nothing. no way to fight it and nothing u can do... he also said that the cop would have to be a "****!" lol i like to be alil sarcastic with them after they give me the ticket.

bout 4 weeks ago i got pulled over twice in one nite. i have hyperwhite H4 headlights and my low beam is out on the driver side i got pulled over once for it and got a warning 40 ft from my house... on a one way street!! the cop was coming down and just turned on his lights lol.
so i got pulled over about a week later by they same cop coming off my one way street he comes over to my car when i shut it off and says "arent u the one i pulled over a week ago to fix ur headlight" i said yes, hes says "ur headlights out still im gona have to give u a ticket", i said are u sure officer, and he went to go look at my lights but when he pulled me over i flicked my highbeam on and turned them off, he goes to the front and i turn them on, both lights come up and are on... he walks back with a dumb look on his face and said sry i looked like it was out and told me to have a nice day lol.

later that night i was driving on highway 280 and i drove past a state trooper with his lights on bc i car was gettin towed, few min later this cars on my @ss and i knew it was a cop, i had cruize control set to 60mph so i knew it wasnt that. he pulls me over and questions me etc and said my front headlight was out. i said are u sure officer... i pulled the same thing as earlier hahaahaha he looks and shruggs his shoulders at the cop on the other side of the car and says "have a good nite" lol my friend in the car was laughin his @ss off both times.

thats what i did i had mine put through as a ford bronco that had better emmissons than a civic lol.

prob with gettin a lawyer is they cost so frigin much. i def should get the db done so i can tell them next time

hahaha i like how he starts backpeddling after he says hes being recorded...

the other video of the road block... thats how it is in NJ. i got an attiude from a cop that said i went through a yellow light at an intersection, that turned red as i was driving through it in the middle of the intersection, he told me the light was red, i said i believe it was yellow officer. my sister in the seat next to me said that she also saw it turned yellow only as i passed through it. the officer said "are u really trying to argue with me" i said no, im not trying to at all, i just know that when i went through the light when it was yellow. he then kept saying and going back and forth to his car etc and asking if i still felt the light was yellow. i still stated yes. he then snickered and went back to his car and came back with a ticket. i told him id see him in court. the court date is feb 24th. so im not sure what im gona do. might go back and record the light and show low long the light is yellow. etc and see if i can get the ticket dropped.

We are like twins I have court date next monday for going throw a yellow light as the back of my car went under the light the light turned red. Best part is the cop doesnt realize that I am the son of a women (my mom) he asked to go on a date with and gave her his number so he is gonna get imbarresed when he finds out.

i dont think i can pleabargan it... u can only do that 3 times in 5 yrs... and i used mine up a long time ago! lol hence why i had so many points. when u plea bargan... a 85$ ticket turns in 400$ plus court fea's.... screw that noise!

i want the ticket revoked or watever... its a bullshlt ticket and im gona video tape the light bc if the yellow light is between 2 lights that are 30ft apart, the first light turns yello for 3s then red, when that light turns red the second light turns yellow.... for 3s.... theres no frigin way i could turn go 30ft and turn within 6s. im also gona complain about the cop. im sick of being harrassed
