Need some help identifying this exhaust part

I'm getting ready to do an engine rebuild that was prompted by failing emissions (and 168,000 miles on the odo). I noticed a while back that my engine was missing something. Several years ago when the car was being rebuilt from an accident, I had the shop swap the v-belt system for a serpentine. I still need to do some chip tuning for this - but I believe something's missing.

What is that black box on the passenger accessory area and what does it do? I know it hooks up to the exhaust system and I'm tempted to say it's part of the AIR system. If I need to buy one - what should I say when I call the parts house/Hawks/etc?

After the accessory swap:

It is part of the emissions system....I believe it is the diverter valve....do a search on "removing A.I.R." all the info you need is there....
