What gives SLP/2055's Expensive
Well I am in the market for headers. I have read everything I can touch in this forum about which kind I need and want. I have to stay emission legal so it kinda narrows it down to SLP's or 2055s maybe hedmans. I see folks saying 2055 are better for the Y-Pipe and the price. Summit sells the Hookers for 770.00 and the Slps for 720? I thought the hookers were cheaper. I have a dual cat car so the Y-Pipe is not a big issue, since I already have a nice Y-Pipe on the car.
I guess if you weren't worried about a y-pipe which headers would you go after.
Overall goal is to have a respactable low 13 high 12 sec car. I will be building a vortec headed 355/383 eventually but am piecing this together over time so want to make sure I have an exhaust that will support it.

Check my signature and follow the "SLP" link for some pictures I took of these headers before/after the install. I went with the SLP's mainly because they're stainless steel and I'll never have to worry about them rusting out. The fact that they have 1 3/4 primaries doesn't hurt either
A lot of people will recommend the 2055's but as I've said numerous times before whenever someone asks which of the two to go with, I always recommend SLP. They have more potential, are made of higher quality material and (in most case's) end up costing equal to, or even less than a set of coated 2055's.
The 2055's are great headers, there's no denying that, but if someone has that kind of money to spend, the combination of larger primaries and stainless steel construction the SLP's offer compared to the Hooker's smaller primaries and rust-prone mild steel construction make the SLP's a much better choice for the money. Of coarse, that's just the way I see it. I'm sure others will disagree...

i bought the 2055s for 398$ almost a year ago. i can't see the price doubling, unless you were looking at the ceramic coated ones?
i would just swap to a single cat setup instead of trying to modify a stock y pipe to fit a set of hedders. sounds like a huge hassle for half the results of a bolt in swap.

I hear ya man, I just had my speed shop price the SLP and the coated Hooker 2055 and really there wasn't a whole lot of difference.
I've read all of the threads too (seen all of the good points and bad of both) and I think it really just comes down to what sticker you'd rather see on your toolbox.
I personally thought well what do I want, possible fit issues with the SLPs and smaller dia at the collectors, y pipe (or where ever it is) and my y-pipe hanging out my wheelwell... Or do I want the hooker 2055's with a smaller id and non stainless steel pipes and may possibly have to grind out some material in the collector... I don't know, 3 strikes for each. I mean the price is pretty close so....
I'll tell you what ask your speed shop guy to be slp and you be hooker (should I even say anything here... no). Play paper rock sissors.... Whoever wins, there ya go. lol

I just looked at the SLP header pictures in LT1FUN's sig. What kind of gasket goes in between the header and y-pipe? If a donut, what is the inside diameter of it?

Man, Just reading through the post it led me to Dyno Don's headers. Anyone have HP numbers from installling his headers.
I do have a cat back system that was installed on the car before I purchase it. It has had the cats removed so I have to put them (not apposed to switching to a single cat) back on when I do the header upgrade.
My biggest issue I guess also is some folks say Texas has to have the AIR pipes and some say they don't. I have been in the Marine Corps for 17 years so don't want to go home here in a few years and find I can't drive my car.

I just talked to Jet Hot on the phone and they want $795 for coated Hooker 2055s and Y pipe. Geezus. There's got to be a cheaper way to put decent headers on my poor 350 that still has L03 exhaust manifolds!

I have a set of SLPs on my 'Z'. The donut is 2 1/4" as is the header to cat pipe, I believe 2055s Have 2 1/2" collectors. I have dual cats and the fitment is poor, I'm in the process of putting together a new 'Y' pipe that I can easily remove the cats and install a straight pipe. I plan to cut the SLP header to cat pipes to refit them to my car with subframe connectors, (shorten the part that goes into the wheelwell). From what I hear the 2055s fit better, the only down side to Hookers is the mild steel tubing and single cat 'Y' pipe. If they are coated that is not much of a big deal. Hooker only offers 1 5/8" primaries but on the street do you really need 1 3/4" primaries. The SLP 1 3/4" primaries are very tight around the steering shaft I had to dimple mine even after moving the shaft as others will tell you. Due to production differences some can move the shaft for clearance some can't. If you JetHot your SLPs (a good decision) you can take a ScotchBrite pad and clean up the abrasion where you dimple the tube next to the steering shaft. Test fit them to mark where you need to dimple the tube and wrap a wrag around a socket and hit it with a hammer on your mark. Even with the installation problems I still like the SLPs and do recommend them just be ready for some hotrod engineering. Also trashcan the SLP gaskets. They aren't worth a crap in fact don't buy the installation kit, you can piece it togather cheaper and with better parts. Mine blew out in about a week. I replaced them with FelPro gaskets and FelPro 2 1/4" iron donut gaskets.

HA! You guys have it easy. Try living in Canada. First you need to add 20% to the price of headers for the exchange rate. Then add another 13% on top of everything (prov and fed sales taxes). We're talking over $1,000 for ceramic Hookers. Free shipping only applies in the US as well.
I too have weighed over the Hooker vs SLP debate. Seems to me that just about everybody has a fairly easy time putting the Hookers in, while the SLP's are hit and miss. For the money that SLP charges, they really should make the Y-pipe go all the way. Same with their rinky dink installation kit. Just make the headers $750 and do it right the first time.

I got my 2055's coated along with a coated y pipe for $520. I'll consider myself lucky. That was about three years ago though.
