Hooker Competition vs Aerochamber

im trying to decide which one to go with as a catback after i have my headers on. there isnt much of a price difference between the two, is there any reason that i should go with one or the other? my carbed 305 is pretty much stock exept for air filter, edelbrock carb and accel ignition and i dont plan to do any internal work to the engine. what would you guys suggest

i think its the same system, despite what the sticky says. they just now call it the supercomp now, and it comes with the aerochamber muffler. someone needs to just call jegs or summit and settle this once and for all!!

Just bought one for my '89. Literaly got it in my house today. Ordered it from Summit. The only difference between the 289.00 and 279.00 is which application it fits on. One is for TPI cars and one is for TBI/Carb cars. Jegs lists a 3rd one for TPI H.O. cars. But to answer the question, no there isnt a difference becuase the "aerochamber catback" doesnt exist. It is only available as the Super Comp that includes an aerochamber muffler.

Side note, I called Summit Tech Support after reading this thread yesterday and here's how the conversation went, made me chuckle a little.

Tech: How can I help you?
Me: I was wondering whats the difference between the Hooker Super Comp catback and the Hooker Aerochamber catback for my 89 Camaro.
Tech: Well the Super Comp is much louder and more aggressive.
Me: I thought I read on your website that both include the same size pipes and same aerochamber muffler, whats the difference?
Tech: Do you have the part number?
Me: HOK-16820-HKR, I dont know the other one.
Tech: Wait let me look it up, hold on.
Tech: Which VIN designation do you ave, 8th digit.
Me: E
Tech Thats the one you need the other is for aa different VIN code. Theres isnt any other difference.
Me: Thanks.

He was going to spout off about how much louder and whatnot without knowing what he talking about.

I bought the same cat back system recently, 3 inch in and dual 2 1/2 inch out, and it's a black Aerochamber muffler. Lots of low end torque.

Its not the best video. I honestly don't like the sound.. but I'm WAYYYY too picky.. any rasp/snappy sound makes me
First few revs were to around 2000-3000 and the last one was about 4500ish.
Seems like lots of people like the aerochamber though.

HOK-16820-HKR is for TBI, so whatever the other is on Summit (16823 I think) is for TPI.

Hopefully the weather wont dump too much snow on us this weekend and I can iinstall mine Sunday in my friends garage.

Mike have you heard any Flowmaster 40 series mufflers? Thats what I have now with stock piping. Just wondering what the difference in sound will be. mine right now is deep and rumbly with a little rasp around 4000. I also dont have a cat on it right now, but will be putting on a catco 2.25 in, 2.5 out to pass inspection.

I had the flowmaster 30 series "top ten shootout" single outlet. It had the same rasp the hooker has which is around mid-low rpm.

Example; cruising at 1800-2800. Moving to heavier throttle without invoking a downshift(30-40% throttle) and the exhaust my make the hillbilly truck "clapping" sound. The sound was UNBEARABLE without a Catalytic converter on the flowmaster.. I just hate that clapping sound.. it belongs on a truck.
The addition of a Catalytic Converter helped a lot and cleaned up the sound a bit but the "clapping" sound is still there although not as bad.

There was no rasp up top with either mufflers with or without a Catalytic Converter.

That is correct, Devestator_x

The Summit part number HOK-16823 HKR is for the TPI, and the one I installed on my 350 sounds great. Just a tad louder than stock sound at idle, then at WOT---it screams!

thanks for the help everyone, that cleared up a lot. it also sounds like most of you like the sound. so its fairly quiet at idle and nice and loud at WOT, but how does it sound compared to stock at highway speeds? i dont want that obnoxious flowmaster drone that my buddies have for hours at a time

At highway speeds, mine sounds a bit louder than stock with no drone. I have a Magnaflow cat and Hooker 2055 headers (use metal gaskets on the headers) which makes it a nice low end torque package. I'm happy with the results.
