SS vs. coated headers

I have a set of SLP 4 into 1 headers I got years ago, but other priorities kept me from installing them. One thing that's always been a question in the back of my mind was whether or not I should have them coated. They are already stainless steel. I've read that often the steering shaft will contact the header requiring a small ding to be put into it for clearance. For headers that are SS, is coating worth the extra expense? With these I risk the damage when shipping them back and forth to JetHot or whoever. I've just read a lot of horror stories of headers getting damaged during shipping...

The car is not driven daily if that matters. If coating is worth it, then I imagine I better test fit the headers for clearance with the steering shaft before getting them coated. (not that I care to put them in just to take them out...)

Have you checked their website lately? All they offer now is coated.

You can ding for clearance after coating. When I got my 2055's back from Jet Hot, one of the collector ***** was bent (had obviously been dropped by them before coating). I called them up about it, they said either try to straighten it back out myself or send it back to them and they would, but either way, don't worry about the coating, it will be fine. For the sake of time I decided to do it myself, and sure enough, the coating was fine afterwards. Pics in the later part of this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...revisited.html

Thanks for the advice. I haven't checked their site in a long time. I just figured I could still ship a set to them to get coated. The only reason I want them coated is to keep the heat out of the engine compartment. I've read bad things about header wrap holding in moisture, so I don't want to go that route. In terms of appearance, I don't mind the look of SS that's turned color from the heat. I think the TPI runners and plenum is just the right amount of eye candy under the hood. Now 4th gens on the other hand. They need all the engine bling they can get. LOL
