Headers and exhaust for a 305

Hey everyone. Winter's got me all edgey since my Camaro is in the shed, so I'm thinking about what I'm going to do once it's nice out, and I've decide on doing the exhaust. Problem is, I barely no anything about exhaust. I've read just about every post on this forum now, and I think I can fake my way through the basics (I'll probably get my exhaust done professionally..). Anyways, one thing I've noticed is that most of the people here have 350's. I was wondering, will the same exhaust system sound the same on a 305 compared to a 350? If not, what's a good system for a very slightly modded 305 (I have Holey 4bbl carb, bigger fuel pump...some little stuff like that).

I'm looking mostly to improve the sound, but if I happen to gain some horse, that would be fine
Someone told me that putting headers on a weaker motor like mine will make it sound bad. So should I stay with my manifolds and change the exhaust from there?

Thank you all in advance!

I also have a 305 engine, and am thinking about headers and a cat-back system. I was looking at the Dynomax cat-back which is about $150.00...the flowmaster that i looked at is about 340.00...I don't know about how it would sound different with headers but I think i'm going to go with Hooker headers, part number 2055...I know that if you really want some sound out of it, then hollow out the catalytic converter, or get a pipe to replace it...it will enhance the muffler sound a lot

I have heard headers on stock or mostly stock motors will sound like garbage, i am running a catco cat, 3" piping and no muffler, basically y's at the back similar to the slp loudmouth, i love the sound of it mean as hell and loud, i'm running stock manifolds and y pipe

whoever says that headers will sound bad on a stock or seemingly weak motor is an absolute fool. headers in almost all cases on almost all engines will improve the sound and also make it slightly louder. our stock manifolds, especially those of us that have the stock LG4 manifolds with small outlets will realize a noticeable gain with headers. there is no reason not to run headers on your engine if you can afford them or if you want them.

I guess it is a matter of preference. Most LG4's and LO3's sound like crap at WOT with headers. They sound like pick up trucks with no exhaust. Headers can make an engine sing but stock 305's usually are belting a flat note to begin with. My car sounded far more refined and tuned with just a cat-back. A cam swap will take care of any sound concerns.

ok heres a good combination:

hedman headers, you can either go shorties or long tubes

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...17&prmenbr=361

if you go with the shorties, here is the y-pipe

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...15&prmenbr=361

and heres the muffler to cap it off

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...26&prmenbr=361

says the muffler is custom fit but i dont know if its single in dual out but you can email them and ask them.

thats a fairly cheap exhaust system, should sound good, it will certainly get your more HP, and it will probably sound good too

although those headers dont have emissions hookups, so if you have emissions testing then you could find a different set of headers/y-pipe

yeah, but you still have to grab the i-pipe and tailpipes. it may be easier/cheaper to buy a full catback system then piecing it together, and the hooker catback is relatively cheap and sounds great.
