Band clamp or what?

What can I use to seal where my exhaust joins together? its where one pipe slides into the other so the pipe diameter is not the same across...one is wider than the other. Do you think something like a 3" band clamp will seal it good enough? I dont want to weld it incase I ever have to take it apart.

Band clamps work great. You can also get away with the standard U clamps.

I hate U bolt clamps, ive broke one, striped another and i usually end up having to cut the pipe to get it apart. from what i understand band clamps are better-expensive but better if ya dont wanna weld-who wants to weld on a cat anyway lol.

but do the band clamps seal good enough to not let exhaust out. Where my pipes meets I have a leak and can hear the ticking ....and sometime the condensation comes out of it

A band clamp should work. You could always have an exhaust shop expand the inner pipe a bit so that it will be a tighter fit.

As long as the two tubes fit fairly well, you should be ok. The stainless steel of the band is ductile enough that it will deform, allowing it to fit the two different size pipes. Of course, I wouldn't call it a perfect seal, since it is ungasketed, but I wouldn't call it a leak either.

I'm dealing with the same issue with my Catco cat and SLP catalyst adapter; the slip fit has a lot of slop in it. I'm going to use a band clamp and see how that works out. I'm trying to find a local Walker exhaust distributor to get it from. If that doesn't pan out...hey, there's always something else I need from Jegs or Summit anyway...I'll just combine the order.

No. My Mufflex catback came with SS band clamps for the muffler inlet, outlet, and the over the axle pipe. They don't hold worth a damn, and don't seal a thing. I even had the muffler and tailpipe fall off while driving due to the clamp (tightened with impact gun). Band clamps might work well on metal as thin as sheet metal. But any decently sized pipe just won't compress with them. I spent the extra money on good old fashioned U bolt clamps and never looked back.

look at Jegs. Someone else just recently posted about the exact thing you need. they have pre-formed stainless band clamps that are formed to join a nominal pipe(for instance, 2.5"OD) to a swaged end pipe(like 2.625"), so its for exactly that purpose. I was doing the same thing on my Y pipe, and just got one in the mail for 2.25" pipe. should work out for you, search under exhaust clamp, can't miss it.
