LS swap advice
hey guys, been so long since ive been here, i had to make a new account.
but i've decided to revive my iroc and rebuild it next spring, so im in the planning stages
since i last did any work on it, many things have changed and im still playing catch up
i got a 88 iroc T-Top with a 305 and HSR and a few other minor upgrades
i picked up a complete 2003 suburban with a 5.3, has about 200k miles. so i can use the stock PCM
the main advantage to this rig is the 4L60 only has 20k on a rebuild from a very reliable local shop (have the paperwork on it) will have it checked out and if needed any parts upgraded to handle the HP
planning on swapping the K member, just to make it easier.
havent decided if i wanna swap to coil overs in the front when i do this. its kinda pricey (havent priced out regular springs and stuff yet)
going to have the 5.3 rebuilt and go with forged pistons/rods as im wanting to boost it
its got 706 heads and from what ive read so far, with some work, they are pretty good heads. am i wrong?
i know the intake and all the front pulley setup has to be redone.
going with headers as well
ive got a lead on a magnuson supercharger TVS1900. it comes with 60lb? injectors, fuel rails and the intake fits cathedral port heads and 2 snouts to use stock TB or a 102TB. the guy wants $3000
thoughts on the SC?
i know the fuel pump will need upgraded
i know theres more that needs to be done, just not thinking of it all currently
thanks guys

Re: LS swap advice
Take some time and read up on the swap stickies as well as others build threads. A few quick thoughts.
Take the 5.3 to a 5.7. The rebuild cost will be the same if not cheaper (more piston options). The 706 heads are fine when ported but a set of 243/799's will take you farther. I wouldn't do anything with boost yet until you have the motor up and running. Having an ambitious plan if fun but often times you become smothered by the details. Eliminate the variables and focus on the import stuff. After you get the thing running and dialed in, then add boost to it.
Fix the broken stuff on the car now
Upgrade all suspension/steering
Upgrade brake system (stock brakes suck and your life depends on it) - This is mandatory on these cars when you deviate from stock power levels.
Plan on having a budget for exhaust and fuel system upgrades.
Have a budget for the million little things you will spend money on.

Re: LS swap advice
well as the SC is just 1 hour away and half the price of new units, thats why im going to check it out
plus building the engine now for it, will save time and re-work later
the only thing broken on the car is a short in the nitrous system, gonna rip all the wiring out and redo it
it runs and drives. i take it out every few months around the block, except in the winter time.

customizing a car makes everything take longer. things don't fit (even some products that claim to be direct fit or bolt-in). you'll have to purchase, modify and / or fabricate parts. there's tons of research and planning to do along the way to overcome obstacles. if the build takes too long, you'll end up selling parts you already bought to buy new / better parts in hopes of making the build easier.
I've been working on my turbo LQ4 1984 Trans Am for like 7 years, but I just bought and restored another 1984 Trans Am back to stock in less than 1 year.

Re: LS swap advice
Sounds like an awesome build. With LS swap, wiring harness is a big item. I paid company to build me one which while pricey was well worth it. Basically new harness built to my situation and just had to plug all connectors in. Yes you can do harness cheaper or by yourself. Regardless time and or money is involved. I think the harness gets overlooked my many people doing swap. You will also have to get VATS system figured out. Not hard but I had to get VATS turned off in my ECU before car would start. Just one of those little things that was frustrating me when I was ready to fire up the engine!
Also, with supercharger you may need hood with more clearance so look into that. Keep us updated!

Re: LS swap advice
i looked at the SC yesterday and clearance is not a problem, it sits lower than my stealth ram, plus ive got a 2" cowl hood
and i agree with you, wiring isnt discussed often.
i talked to a local hot rod shop and they said they just re-use the donor rig, remove any un-needed wires and re-program it. thats where im leaning currently. but no decision has been made yet
