Picking a daily driver cam

Looking for a decent daily driver cam. Engineers e is a 383 stroker .9.3:1 compression afr 195 eliminator heads. Was looking at the comp xe256h-10
212/218 duration @.050
.447/454 lift
110 lsa 106 centerline .
Opinions?
Again this is going in a daily driver mated to a t56 with 4.11 gears.

Daily driver you said, so that xe256 is perfect. But you are limiting yourself with that cam because it's done long before your heads are.
For simple you could use 1.6 rockers for more valve lift. You have an overdrive gear, so even with your 4.11 gears you can go larger
in cam selection without losing bottom end TQ. Consider the xe262.

Cruising rpms is what worries me . Should be going down the road around 1500 rpm @ 60 in 6th gear. The motor has the xe274 in it now in front of a 700r4 with 4.11 gears out back . You.can feel it surging pretty good around 1800 .

I would guess the surging is mostly due to tuning and not the cam. The XE274 has only 13 degrees of overlap.

Don't want to go roller because it's not a factory roller block .
dont think the surge is the tune cam just isn't in yet . And it's a performer rpm intake. Should be fine with that cam. Always made great power just a little radical for my taste in a driver.

Surging is more prevalent in gears with a lot of mechanical advantage, like 1st and 2nd. Cruising in overdrive should produce no noticeable surging. What engine management system do you have?

That cam isn't as aggressive as you think. You have a longer stroke that eats up cam duration and a great set of cylinder heads that promote good air velocity. To put things in perspective, my 427 has over 300 degrees duration and I can cruise at 1300 rpm in 6th gear. It took time to tune it well enough to do that though.

That's what retrofit lifters are for. You're missing out on gobs of torque and power by not using a cam with more lift (like a roller cam). Your AFR 195 heads pick up gobs of flow between 0.45 and 0.50 lift. You spent a good amount of money on those heads... use them!

The 256 is really not enough cam for a 383. It'll run like grandma's grocery cart mated with grandpa's tractor.

The 262 would be MUCH better.

A roller would be EVEN BETTER... the XR276HR is well and widely known to run real good in 350 EFI cars for example, can't be too tough to get it to run in a carbed 383.

There's no reason not to be "fond" of a cam button. Just a cheeeeeeepie nylon one works fine behind a stock timing cover. (guess how I know this, and how many times...) You could even get a reinforced TC if that's your worry.

The oil pump puts a YUUUUUJJJJE load on the cam, pulling it rearwards into the engine. About the only time the cam button ever really even does anything, is under heavy braking or during a wreck.

Given the vast improvement in lobe profiles that rollers make possible, as well as the inherent risk involving oil formulations, it's almost stupid, in 2018, NOT to go that way.

Get the "upgrade" valve spring package for hyd rollers no matter what cam you end up deciding on. That way you won't have to buy that part twice.

I doubt that the surging you're experiencing is cam related, The 256 would be very much into it's RPM band at that engine speed. Pretty much an off-idle deal. I would bet that if you were able to read the air/fuel ratio at cruise, they would need some tuning. And the timing needs to be examined at that RPM too.
As for a cam selection, you're at the bottom end of the advertised duration scale already. Next step to improving the "driveability" would be a roller as suggested.
You say 1500 RPM at 60 MPH? Would that be with a .5:1 6th gear T-56? 26" tires?

Yes t56 with a .5:1 overdrive 4.11 gears and a 275/40/17 tire. Or 25.6 diameter.
and I've also looked at that 262 cam sofa. Just don't want to over cam it. Hell since I've owned the car I've only gone over 85 once lol . Just want a fun driver. Have the other car for a toy.
