Circle/dirt track cam

If one was to put a circle/dirt track cam into an otherwise stock-rebuilt to factory spec 350 i.e bored .30 and just basic reworked heads, would it work or would other mods have to take place? I'm sure there are different spec cams but I'm curious.. Also, is the lope for most of those type cams so high to require stall converter?

Re: Circle/dirt track cam

Most purpose-built racing cams aren't any good for anything other than whatever they were built for. They tend to optimize the RPM range and other characteristics for ONE set of circumstances.

So if you see "heavy car, tight corner low banked ¼-mile tacky track" or some such in the description, odds are, it'll work great for that scenario; anything else, not so much. Unless you can somehow match the required torque curve for that situation, to whatever you're doing.

Go to acoupla dirt-track races at different tracks and watch em in person, you'll understand better what goes on.

Yes most any racing-only cam will NOT work well with a stock converter OR with street pump-gas compression ratios.

Re: Circle/dirt track cam

What are you trying to accomplish, anyway? You already have a cam?
Most of those cams won't idle below 1500 RPM, will never manage 10 MPG no matter what, and will hurt the rest of the valvetrain in less than a month.
For a stock-rebuild 350, a generic 204/214-112 420/442 cam is a safe, near-stock, slight improvement, and the next step up, the 214/224-112, 442/465 cam gives up a little torque at idle and a little computer-compatibility but otherwise works fine with everything else stock, but I wouldn't try it with a T5 and 2.73:1 gears, which you shouldn't try with any cam. Even with the baby 204 cam, you still want a cruise RPM around 1800 at 65 MPH, and a first gear that gives at least 3000 RPM at 25 MPH. More cam requires more gearing.
