new to tgo. need help deciding on an engine.
Hello new here. Never been a member of a forum.
Anyways i just bought a 82 TA. A TA was my first car many years ago. And when i saw this one i knew it was time.
So it has a tired 350 in it. And i cant decide what to go with. Im lucky i have a few choices laying around the shop. So.....
Option: 1
I have a stock 6.0 and 4l80e out of a 04 hd.
Option: 2
I have a new 383 with about a .490 lift cam have to look for dur.
Option: 3
I have a 496 bbc. New on my stand. Aluminum heads. Solid roller.
Option: 4
I have a 350 with a gm847 cam. Can go vortec heads or 186 double humps.
Anyway i need your input!

I used a stock 6.0 from an H2 in mine. makes great power and I still get decent mileage. My car runs a lot smoother. I've also smoked every car thats tried to race me. I plan to upgrade it later, but I'm very happy with it even in stock form.

1st welcome to TGO.
Well you have a lot of nice options to pick from. Any of the 4 would work great.
You need to think about what you want to do with the car, what will it be used for, what is your style/taste, do you want old school, modern, high tech.
If it was to be a drag car with limited street use I would say the solid roller 496 for sure, but if you wanted to do auto cross or what not that may be too nose heavy.
If you want to drive it daily, take it any and everywhere then I would say 2004 6.0L
If you want daily fair weather use, not looking to race everything around and keep an old school charm to it, then the 350 with vortec heads.
If you wanted a step up from that then the 383..
You also need to think about the rest of the car too. What parts, budget and skill do you have for driveline, chassis, suspension.
The 496 will tear the car to shreds, you will need a much stronger trans, rear end, all suspension, sub frame connectors and roll cage to keep the sheer power from twisting car up and breaking the driveline.

If I were to do it all over again, (and I just might), I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to make the move to an LS series engine. A decade back it was a complicated procedure but today it's as easily swapped as any other engine.
Of course, performance goals will dictate the balance of the drivetrain however from a horsepower per cubic inch perspective, not to mention the added benefits of driveability and economy, there no easier way to go faster.

Wow overwhelming vote towards the 6.0! Well i think i agree! I have the 4l80e with it too. At least i will gain overdrive. I was debating between carbing it or not. But i want too put some boost to it later so i was thinking that leaving it injected would be better. I will try to post pics of the car but i tried once and it wouldnt work. Thanks for the input i think this will be a fun swap!

Speaking of the 4L80...and I haven't done a search (yet), I'd look to know what mods are necessary to make it fit. I'm guessing a cross member and drive shaft at the very least. Of course the wiring will need to be addressed. What off the tail stock and torque arm mount? Is the relocation of the torque arm to the crossmember a must do?
We gave up on the 4L80 fitting into the 67 Chevelle as the trans tunnel is very small and cutting up the floor wasn't an option. Not sure if there's the physical room to make it fit in a 3rd gen although there might be.
