Engine Swap(complicated) Questions

I have a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro V6 RS that was my first car, after years of great driving, I am deciding to do an engine and tranny swap, to give it a little more life, but with the same body.

The engine I am putting back into it is a ATK Performance GM Gen I 350ci rebuild.

The transmission is a 1974 Corvette manual four speed.

My two biggest errors is the motor mounts for the 91 engines do not match up to the block on the Gen I 350, I was wondering if there was a known bracket that would work there, or if we would need to go with the old motor mount and drill out new holes in the frame.

Same issues with the transmission, since the manual is much smaller(obviously) than the automatic the original bracket would not work. The original bracket mounts below the automatic transmission, the manual will mount from the top. Again if anyone knows of one out there that would fit for this specific tranny to a 91 rs body I would greatly appreciate that knowledge.

We are in the process and have just about everything else ready, wiring, clutch pedal, hydraulic throwout bearing, etc. It is just coming down to those two being mounted in without having to create our own. If we do have to end up going to a machinist and just requesting the correct build we will, but in the end we would like to avoid that.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you need any further information please feel free to fire away. I am not a mechanical expert, I know much less than my father who is doing most of the mechanical work on this one. I am more of a body guy myself, so forgive me if I sound a little inexperienced.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Engine Swap(complicated) Questions

The mount pads on a SBC V8 haven't changed since they were added to the block, in 1958. 58-2000 are all the same. All you need is the correct set of V8 mounts & engine stands for a 82-92 Camaro/Firebird.

You'll have ALOT more trouble getting that Muncie into that car than it's worth. I STRONGLY suggest re-thinking that part of the proposal.

Re: Engine Swap(complicated) Questions

Great, as I was browsing a few forums and part shops that is what I came to the conclusion with the mounts, good to have that confirmed!

In general the transmission will have troubles in this car, or do you mean just because trying to get it to mount right?

I know we will have to be cutting a hole where the old column was to get the shifter through, but what other issues are you aware of that we will run into?? I definitely want a manual in there, I guess I could go 5 instead of 4 speed, any suggestions?

Re: Engine Swap(complicated) Questions

You have to come up with a way to mount the torque arm… may also need a custom drive shaft.

Re: Engine Swap(complicated) Questions

I have a Muncie In my car. It was in there when I bought it so I'm not sure exactly what the po went through to get bit in there. It is out of the car right now so I can get some detailed pics of how they mounted the torque arm if you send me your email address. The actual trans mount does not look custom or altered so it is something you could get off the shelf. I took the shifter and torque arm off not long ago It was not a high tech complicated set up. Looked like stuff that would be in just about anybodies garage. Go for it my car is not freeway friendly even with 3.43 gears with it though. If you are planning on frequent freeway miles you might want more than a four speed or some 3.08 or so gears in the rear. Good luck.
