First T.P.I 305 to 383 IROC-Z

So I finally got my motor to the machineshop & started buying parts to make up my shortblock. Heres a little history on my swap.

I initially wanted to stick with a 350 then I decided to go 383, then someone convinced me to go LS! So I went out & bought a 5.3, ls6 intake & injectors. About 6 months later I decided it wasn't going to happen. Just to much fabrication that I was uncomfortable with doing, so I sold the 5.3 & started searching for an l31 with the vortec heads in particular.

Well I found one! Only 300 for the entire set-up including vortec heads, the guy really didnt know what he had....

So it was settled! enough bsing around! I was going to do an l31 vortec headed swap with a hotcam & call it a day. I wanted mid/high 12s.

Then one day I was bitten by the bug! To hell with high 12's I need to atleast be in the 11's! So here's what I've decided on.

L31 Block bored 0.30 & stroked to a 383 10.5:1 CR (Should be home end by the end of the WK 4/2/14)
AFR 195's (1041) (Not yet ordered)
XR282HR Comp Cam (Ordered)
First Intake (https://www.firstfuelinjection.com/services.html) (ordered, & waiting delivery!)
Eagle Specialty Rotating Assemblies Non-Forged(ESP-B13405L03068) (Ordered)
Rebuilt 700R4 (In my garage!)
3.23 posi (On the car)

My expectation is to reach 400-420rwhp with this set-up. I'm thinking that cam & the First Intake should give me a really healthy amount of low-end which should make it really fun to drive around town.

What do you guys think?

PS: A shout out to ORR89roc who helped me figure out how to get my CR in the range I needed it & gave me some great info on how to choose cams as well as throw in some recommendations!

PPS:I know the LS1's are great! I know it might have been cheaper & easier to make this power with one! I know LS1's are great!

Re: First T.P.I 305 to 383 IROC-Z

I'm getting ready to order my camshaft & after a little more research its starting to look like the 282hr from comp cams is going to be a better choice.

It has less lobe separation which should help me with my midrange & a higher duration as well. One con is that it has less lift 544 with 1.6 vs the 555 that the 280 has.

What do you guys think? Is it worth sacrificing the lift?

Of course my horse!

I ended up going with the xe282hr. Less lift, more lobe. better midrange/lowend.

If anything this thing should be a freakn TQ monster.

Re: First T.P.I 305 to 383 IROC-Z

I have not decided on a stall converter yet. I emailed circle d & here is what Chris recomended.

"I think our 245mm single disk will compliment your setup very well. I would do our 2C, should flash to about 3000-3200 range. A little higher than what you asked for, but the cam will be very happy and still very street friendly."

I was thinking 2800 for that cam/intake set-up. What do you guys think?

Anyone used circle d converters before?

Personally, I don't know anything about Circle D.

If your intent is to maximize drag strip performance, you'll probably want something more along the line of 3500-3800 stall.

Did you mean XR282HR?

Sure did & this will not be a drag car. I plan on doing alot of street & highway driving in it.

Re: First T.P.I 305 to 383 IROC-Z

I like circle d. One of the best converter builders in the nation. But they are a little on the high side. They are local on Hempstead Not too far from 290.
Also look up freak show converters. I got one for the 700 in my c10 w 383 and it made a nite/day difference. Only 3000 stall. It had a b&m 2500 in it before.
Motor only makes 400-425 but it runs alot better now.
