96 to 99 is a vortec motor, or are you working on a vortec truck. if you are you may want to go over to GM Truck Central .com those guys are up on the Vortec stuff

Are you sure about the source of the engine? While that block casting was used in '96-'99 Vortec engines, it wasn't used exclusively for those engines. It was also used in '95 LO5 TBI engines, crate replacement engines, crate performance engines, etc.

The heads are LO5 TBI heads - aka, "swirlports". While not necessarily horrible, they aren't considered the best for a "performance" build.

So, that begs the question - What are your plans for the engine and car? The 3 sets of heads you mention are from 3 different eras. The 487s are 75cc chambers - they were decent back in 1971, but not a very good choice (don't have hardened seats, would require domed pistons for decent compression ratio). The 416s are 58cc chambers used on 305s - okay, but the intake valves are small, and compression will be too high on a 350 unless you have dished pistons. The 487s and 416s have the '86-earlier intake mount bolt pattern, while the 193s have the center two bolts on each side at 72 degrees (instead of 90 degrees like the rest) - this would affect your intake choice.

So before you can pick our brain, we need to pick yours to know more about your plans. Let's start with what you will be doing with the car, and what induction (carb, TBI, TPI, etc.) you plan on running.
