NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ???

O.K. , eng. out , car on lift , getting ready for new G.M. crate engine . looked at eng. mounts to swap in new ones . O.M.G. , what a P.I.T.A. this is going to be . been thinking about it all day . an idea , wondering if anyone has tried what I am thinking . remove wheels , compress coil spring in place (leave spring compressor in place) , un-bolt inner "A" arm , swing aside , R&R mount . reverse all above & same on other side . I DO have all the tools & equipt. to do this . my question is has anyone done this same procedure ??? seems to me it should work . I have read all the other methods to change mounts . wondering if anyone has tried the method I am thinking about . ANY COMMENTS ???

Re: NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ???

No Need for all that extra work IMO. It's not a TON of extra work - but still extra work. I've replaced MM with the engine still installed, AND the suspension still installed. That means you can do it too.

You can reach the lower bolt easy and the upper bolts with an wrench thru the access holes. You just gotta' hold the bottom and spin from the top . It's not "easy" and takes some patience, but sure beats the hell out of removing ( just about ) the entire front control arms. With the engine removed you will have plenty of room to reach the upper bolts with your other arm. The factory hardware uses nuts with a "hat" washer inside the crossmember so when installing the replacement mounts the "hat" washer will hold the nut from falling thru the boxed wrench. The factory also used large washers inside the crossmember for a bolt or 2 and those can be a PITA to get set in place - but I'd be sure to re-use them.

P.S. I just noticed that your car is on a lift,.... I've always done motor mounts while laying on my back. Being on my back allows my arms to bend in positions you can't duplicate if your arms are over your head.

Re: NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ???

I just did motor mounts about 2 months ago. I drilled the rivets from the old mounts, took out the bottom bolt (the easy one to get to) and pryed up the clamshell. Took the old ones out, put the new ones in, compressed the clamshell with a c-clamp and put the bolt/nut back on.

Re: NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ???

I know , have read almost all threads on the motor mounts . I do have all the power tools etc. . I have time , I just wonder if anyone has done them the way I described . (the only thing I don't I have is youth) so even if it takes longer I'm O.K. with that . I am going to replace the whole mount assy. . thanks for the comments . I still wonder if it's been done the way I described . please more comments .

Re: NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ???

When I installed the mounts for my V8 swap, i ended up having to remove the springs, drop the control arms, etc. I could not get the right angle on the swivel socket to get at all of the bolts. It was more work, but made it way easier to change them out. Since I had the time I didn't mind doing it that way, got to change out the control arm bushings while I had the arms loose anyway too.
