Car: 91 camaro rs
Engine: v6 :/
Transmission: auto
replacing 3.1 motor
i have a 91 rs v6 auto
my motor is pretty much all bad.
just wanting to replace it. found a motor online for a grand says its been tested and 5 yr warrenty and its complete.
never done anything like this. can i just remove the motor and leave the tranny intact and slide the new one in place and put it all back together and if so how does the transmission detach from the motor?

Re: replacing 3.1 motor
I just swapped mine out. You are going to have to lower the tranny to get to the bolts that mount it to the engine. I suggest that you don't remove the tranny as I did...A lot of headaches...Make sure you use a jack and a block of wood so you don't damage the pan. Remove the 4 bolts holding in the cross member. As you're lowering it, you will have to remove the two connectors on the drivers side (remember to put them back in before bolting everything back up. This will make connecting easier). Try to avoid disconnecting the shifter cable if at all possible. Readjustment has been a pain. Once you lower it, you are going to need a long, and I mean LONG extension to reach the top bolts or a swivel. Since you're breaking the bolts loose after 20+ years, try the long extension first, unless you have an endless supply of swivels. Once you get the bolts removed, you will need to unbolt the 3 bolts from the torque converter to the flywheel. Make sure you mark the holes so you know how it goes back on. Slide the torque converter toward the tranny. You may be able to remove the dip stick now from the tranny. Use a 1/2 opened ended wrench to remove the transmission cooling lines. I replaced mine with half metal lines and half transmission hose for easier installation. The rest is removing the engine. No too difficult, however, you may want to invest in new exhaust manifolds as the bolts are probably going to snap off on you. You will also want to remove the catalytic converter from the "Y" pipe to make for easier removal.

Oh, depending on the year, your starter may or may not work with your replacement motor. It's best to remove the flywheel off of your old motor and put it on your replacement, unless it's the same flywheel.
