505 BBC Swap-the best of both worlds

This is about a tall deck 427 BBC and how it is the best of BOTH worlds of torque/hp for a street car. Relative inexpensive too. Look at the dyno sym from my friend Techinspector1. He is very smart and been doing this for a long, long, time.

With the tall deck isn't fitment of everything else an issue? Headers, accessories, and so forth? I know tall deck truck engines can be had for cheap, but I think there's a reason you just don't see many street cars using them. Heavy, big, and no real benefits over a standard BBC.

Re: 505 BBC Swap-the best of both worlds

I heard that about tall decks as well but it says .400" taller. That doesnt seem like alot but every little bit adds up. I just know some sbc heads have ports raised .1-.2" and still clear ok.

Nice build tho. Cant deny a stroker bbc 0-5500 rpm is gonna make torque. Just not sure how good thats gonna be on street tires tho lol

Cant you just make 496-500 cubes out a regular 454 block? If fitment is a concern?

Re: 505 BBC Swap-the best of both worlds

RPM HP TQ
2000 200 526
2500 255 535
3000 323 566
3500 403 604
4000 478 628
4500 540 630
5000 584 613
5500 600 570
6000 567 496

With those kind of numbers and the original idea of built not bought being apart of a swap, you figure a way to get er-done and hook up the tires.

Maybe a big tire car but our wheel wells wont take much more than a 11" tire and 27" tall

Orr-I don't get why everything on here has to be small tire. What happened to the idea of Pro-Street??. The way I think is you shoe horn a stroker BBC into one of these cars knowing the next thing you need to address is the traction issues it creates. That is swapping as I know it. Well really hot rodding as I know it. Strange we don't see more of that posted on here.

Some guys like pro street but i was never into it. Its alot of work to tub one of these cars but they do look good with fat meats. Motor does well for what it is. Extremely torquey. Would be a blast thats for sure.

My next build will be big block turbo.

Re: 505 BBC Swap-the best of both worlds

Headers will be an issue. With the taller deck surface and when most aftermarket cylinder heads have raised exhaust ports, there are very few headers, if any, for a third gen that will fit. With the exhaust ports sitting higher, the headers sit higher and won't fit under the floor. Custom built headers will greatly add to the cost of the swap.

A tall deck block will also need to use regular height valve covers to clear the heater box.

There's always potential with tall deck blocks but first you need to find one and finding one that's in good enough condition to rebuild. A lot of the tall deck engines were not the 427T (7.0L) engines but the smaller 366 (6.0L) which have no performance potential.
