It isn't the fact of it being a 305.................nor the fact of using a 4" stroker crank...........................................it's more the fact OMG-that you let a web forum dictate to you how to spend your money. If you WANT a 305 then BUILD a 305.Turn this thread into "how to do" over a question of "what to do".But damm it,stick to your guns and build whatever you want.

Like i said several times... you got a 305, dont worry about stroking it! Just freshen it up, shave the vortecs down and add a vortec style intake of your choice. Whether it be carb or EFI, doesnt matter. Get a small cam to match, i'd try a 10 deg split something like a 210/220 with the vortecs on a 110 lsa or so as a start, get it tuned up and enjoy it. It will blow the doors off a V6 car you have now and probably hang/outrun L98 motors!

Its a good learning experience to keep it cheap at this point, just a mild freshen up with the bearings in the motor. Have a shop check the rods/pistons, re-ring it perhaps if the cylinders look good. else bore it over, get new slugs and then reassemble.

I dont see a problem getting 250whp out of a mild setup and that will run low 13's all day long.

You know Orr-this site and many, many, others have the same two types of threads.A build thread that is informative and ones that ask what to do.The build thread is what I am suggesting this O/P needs to turn this into.Kind of my point.Build what you want and update us how it's going.

With any forum, when you ask for advice you will get alot of opinions back. Keep an open mind, because there are alot of opinions that will NOT be what you wanted to hear. Thats good because sometimes what you wanted to hear is WRONG. Theres good advice and bad advice given. Take it with a grain of salt.

If you'd be happier with a 305, do it.

We are tryin to help you save money and achieve more with GOOD advice. Instead of blowing a bunch of money on fancy rotating assemblies for a 305 with a 4 inch bore, you can spend that much an LS1 swap or something. Or build a badass 383. You'll be able to spend that money you would have spent on weird odd ball 305 parts, on better cylinder heads, or a T56. Or a gear swap.

These cars are money pits, dont spend more on an engine than you need to to meet your goals. A 350-based (like a 383) engine is the cheapest, most practical way to hit power/streetability sweet spots witout going Gen III/IV.

Hell, as I mentioned earlier, you can make a 305 very fast if you want to put a little money and work into it - but spending that money and work on oddball bottom end parts is NOT the way to do it. Get some ported 416's and a big solid flat tappet cam and a holley 650. You will have a fast car. Putting that same work into a 350 will give you more power - but if you're willing to get less return for your money then do it with a 305, it's not a big deal to us.

But the fact is that we have all been there before, we've put these things together and spent the money. And we have the benefit of hindsight. I've got a nice 355 with vortec heads. My biggest regret is not going for an LSx swap, becuase by the time I spent all the money on all my parts, I would have been in the ballpark for one. You could easily have been in the same boat with all this money dumped into a 305 and wished you had a 350 in a couple of years.
