New Engine Problems

I just got my engine back; 355tpi, Dart heads, hot cam, 24lb accel injectors. So far it has chewed up 2 distributer gears. I was pulling a 42 engine code before the engine quit. I think the problem is mechanical, but my mechanic doesn't seem to like that thought. What does anyone else think?

What cam is in it? Also, what oil pump?

I have a Hot cam and a generic oil pump. My mechanic finally agreed to rebuild the engine. But I would still like to know what caused this. This guy said this was the first it ever happened to him and has no idea how it could happen.

Also you don't say what dist gear you are going back with that doesn't survive...

IIRC there's a distributor gear in the GMHPP catalog. You might want to get that one, since it's supposed to be used with that cam.

I really don't think the motor needs to be "rebuilt" for a thing like that. There's basically nothing a builder can do that will cause that to happen; it's a matter of who chose the parts. They have to be compatible.

The thing about the oil pump is that it gets driven by the dist shaft, so it is possible for it to put too great a load on the gear if an unsuitable pump is selected. My choice for an oil pump in a street motor is a M55 (regular, $12 SBC oil pump) with the Mr Gasket spring ($4) in it. This gives slightly higher pressure than the M55A that costs twice as much, but standard volume, so there's no excessive loading on the distributor.

I believe just a regular gear was used. Same type as in the l98. A Ford guy I know who builds engines thinks it's cam walk.

The engine will be coming out at my mechanics expense. He will at least take the oil pan and intake manifold off. Hes looking for any damage caused by the metal shavings from the gear. I'll mention the special distributer gear to him.

Thanks.
