Question about an engine
hey i just have a question about an engine and i really didnt know where to post but here it goes lol, i want to swap out my motor for the following but i dont know if this motor will be streetable as a daily driver, it is my only means of transportation, but i really only drive about 15 miles to work one way and when i go out i dont go on long road trips with it but im curious as to what you guys think of this motor, im sure the tunnel ram would have to go, but do you think this motor would run on 93 octane and get more then 4 miles to the gallon or is it just to much?
406 sbc, 11to1 compression , 202 double hump fuelie heads, 1.6 roller rockers, comp cam 268/280 520/515, edelbrock tunnel ram (2) 450 holleys
any thoughts would be appreciated!

Engine: 355 w/ ported 416s
Transmission: T10, hurst shifter
Axle/Gears: 10 bolt, true-trac, 3.73
is that a roller cam? ie, is that duration spec, advertised, or @.050?
I do think you'd get ~6MPG, and get pretty good power, not amazing, but pretty good. I think it's a far cry from what anyone might call streetable.
11:1 on fuelie heads would need 93 octane, and less timing I think.

Not a very good combo.... not enough head flow, too small combustion chamber in the heads; not enough cam for the intake (or, too much intake for the cam); intake WAY overkill for the heads. No way in Hades it will run anywhere near right on the watered-down cat pee you get at gas stations these days.
You're probably also not far off at the 4 mpg guess.
Honestly, for a daily driver, it's not a good choice. Terrible in fact.
It has some good parts though; with different heads and a better intake choice, it maybe could be made ALOT better. Hard to argue with a 400.
That would all depend on how much you'd have to pay to get it, and what kind of budget you've got for altering it, and how much you could sell some of the mis-matched parts for.

Those heads are old-school and out-dated. Tunnel ram and "streetable" don't belong in the same sentence. If this is an engine that's already together that you're considering buying, pass. You'd be one frustrated, cash-strapped driver on a daily basis.

someone i know is getting rid of it, its 2500 for the motor and a rebuilt saginaw 4 speed the guy used it in his drag car for a short time but pulled it out to run a bbc, supposedly around 1500 miles on both and it would be going in a 84 monte carlo ss, i would decrease the timing and maybe putting a thicker head gasket on to reduce the cr i figure that would help a little and i was also throwing around the idea of trying to sell the tunnel ram and the fuelies and purchasing a airgap intake(or somthing along those lines) some used vortec iron heads and buying a new holley 650 double pumper off my friends dad all in theory though i havent purchased the motor/trans yet

Doesn't sound like the right direction to be headed in, to me. Too much money, and too much more would have to be spent, to turn it into what you say you really want. Keep looking.

You could build a pretty nice little smallblock for $2500,and a saginaw 4 speed is of very little value.IMHO,pass on it,use the $2500 fo an engine that is suited to your needs,you'll be much happier in the end.

yea, im thinking ill pass on that motor thanks for all the input. i really just have an infatuation with the number 406 its the only size motor i really want to drop into my car lol
