1974 350

I'm looking into buying a 1974 350 out of a truck. I know it is a 4-bolt main and that I could get it for cheap. It runs good and has 22k miles on it. Will this bolt up to my 86 T-5 tranny? Also, what kind of horsepower and torque would that motor be putting out? Thanks.

The T5 will work.

It is hard to tell what hp and tq that engine will put out. It was built at the beginning of the smog era. That and the gas prices provided for weak stock engines from the factory. What heads are on it? I would get the casting # if you haven't. They are what choke them out.

22k original, or after rebuild?

EDIT: What intake is on it? A little more info would help.

i have a 72 350 out of a truck, casting number 3970010

i bolted it up to my 86 5 speed with no problems, now have a 700r4, and getting rid of that for a t56.

im not sure what they were putting out for HP, but not that much it felt like.

i recently rebuilt my motor.

70's era truck 350's are not real screamers.
very low compression dished pistons, crappy heads with small valves.
Small duration, low lift cam
about 160 net HP about -190/ 200 Gross BHP.

You won't know for sure if it is a 4 bolt until ya pull the pan and look. truck 350's can be both even with the same block casting number.

The block crank and rods are usable for rebuilding. the rest is not much good for a high performance build.
The whole top end needs to be upgraded.

What kind of power are you after? whats the budget?

A full home ported large valved 305 head is a nice "budget bolt on" for this motor. You probabily have a suitable set of these heads laying around. It's a step in the right direction.

What is the head casting number on the 350? (under the valve cover)

I'm on a tight budget. Can I use my rockers and heads off my 305? What about my cam? I'm going to look at it today. I'll let you guys know whats up.

hey, i put my 305 heads on my 350 (416 heads), used for low end torque.

high compress i think 58cc, cut them for bigger valves they would be very nice heads to have on your 350

You'll need a different flywheel. The '86 will be a one-piece rear main seal, which uses a different flywheel mount than the two-piece rear main seal of the '74.

A 153-tooth flywheel for the '83-'85 f-body application will fit the bill.

i have 305 heads with larger valves on my 327 with a moderate cam. i have yet to drive the car but the engine sounds good.
(it ws a low perf. 327 with junk heads that had 1.74 valves )

I'm putting a late '70s 350 4-bolt main into my '84, one thing is the dipstick is on the opposite side, doesnt look like it'll be a problem--yet...........so should I keep the heads off the 305 I'm pulling out ? they need to be rebuilt , but are they a better basic design, ports and chambers, or will they need a bunch of port and chamber work like the early 350 heads do ??

Depends on casting numbers, 416 will do fine with a little bit of work. Probably not the best heads, but definetly better then truck heads I also got a truck motor, mostly because chances are higher that it will be a 4 bolt. Whats the number on the block?
