Aftermarket Engine Blocks

I'm looking at some engine kits and crate engines as part of the planning for an engine swap in my 92. Some of them use aftermarket blocks from Dart and World Castings and others use an OEM 350 that has been tested and re-machined to accomodate the new internals. For a vehicle that will be primarily street driven but also see some limited track time, are there any advantages to the aftermarket blocks? And are there any downsides to using the OEM blocks for high hp builds?

wow, someone actually willing to concider a after market block....

i currently use a world block, if you can support the cost of this option i think you should go for it. Now i only bought the short block and then bought all the other parts to my tastes. Now the big problem i ran into so far is people assuming your stupid because you tell them you have a 427 small block chevy. A lot of people wont believe you when you tell them....i kinda get a kick out of that.

the after market casts are stronger then using a block from one of the big three. They have a higher density cast, so the iron used is of better quality, they are also universal as far as holes for parts. My world block came with holes drilled for both late model mods and old school.

The hudge drawback with these is that they do cost a ton of money compared to what you would need to do with an already used (and sometimes abused) block.

My advice is if you can afford it, do it......but just remember that you will get more power out of it then you think and everything else down the line will need to be enhanced more then normal.

hope this helps a little...
