Swapping from TBI to TPI...
Hi All!
I’m working on a ‘89 Firebird with the TBI 305. I’ve acquired what looks to be just about everything for a stock MAF style TPI swap, intake, wiring harness, computer, etc. I’m trying to do the swap and make it as if the TPI came stock. Then, having a working TPI setup as a starting point, I’ll start doing other upgrades.
I understand that the rear end needs to be dropped to change the fuel pump. A bud has told me that it can be changed from within the car by cutting out some sheet metal under the seat or somewhere. Is this so and just where do I start? Keeping in mind that in due time, I’ll be upgrading everything (even the motor to a 383) so, I’m looking at the Holley 12-914.
Next: Is the distributer different? I can’t find any info on this.
Is there a list of sensor part numbers? If possible, I’d like to install new from the beginning.
Any other useful tips would be greatly appreciated!
Best to all,
Paul Bell

I see from your post that you are fairly new to the board so welcome aboard. The removal of your fuel pump from with in the car has been discussed a lot on this board. Please do a search and you will find that you are better off removing the tank. If you would like to get more info about TPI, go to the TPI forum. You should be able to use your tbi distributor on the TPI swap.

Yeah, new to this board, but not new to working on rods! My other ride is a 600HP ‘71 Monte Carlo show car with first generation Holly ProJection. Built it in the late 80's. Sweet, runs somewhere in the 12's.
OK, I’ve done a search and I’ve come up with quite a bit on the fuel pump access hatch. A hot topic around these parts. Don’t worry guys, I’ll do it right and put a bolted steel door over it with a ring under the body. I know a thing or three about fabrication.
Didn’t find too much in the search pertaining specifically to what to expect when going from stock TBI to stock TPI and nothing showing sensor numbers.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks again!

Made me smile! I try to be a little conservative with my estimates of the old car but it is heavy. And the rear tires do like to smoke. One time I did totally spank a fomoco 5.0 after he pulled a pretty impressive wheelie. And the time I broke the transmission, I blew away my brother’s Mustang 5.0 while I had third gear only on the way to Select Performance. Makes me wanna wake it up from it’s ten year nap!
Thanks a ton for the Trans Am Creations USA website. I really needed that, I already see I need to do a few more things than I anticipated. Good answer!
