ZZ Crate Engine...

I was just lookin' at SDPC's site, and came across a ZZ383/425 engine...sounds very intising...

Right Here

My question is...it says it is used w/ a Carb, but it doesn't have an intake manifold....So, would I be able to bolt up, let's say, a SuperRam to it...using Accel's Base and runners, and everything? If so, then, what type of wiring setup would I need? Would the factory TPI wiring/sensor setup work?

I'm still kicking around options on what to do. I'd think that combo is doable...but that's why I'm posting it...to see what the real deal is...

Also, would this bolt in like a regular L98? Would I be able to pair up the ZZ to a 700R4 too? Sorry, I know these are pretty general questions, but I'm just figurin' this stuff out...

I got the looks, I got the suspension, I got the gears...now just need the powerhouse to back it all up....

I was reading up on some stuff...says the heads the ZZ crate uses has the intake ports in the "Vortec" (raised) position....so, essentially meaning I'd have to get the sdpc baseplate and modify roughly 2 bolt locations and grind some of it, accel plenum and runners to make it all work? And the 700R4 would basically bolt up (so I've heard), and the TPI wiring essentially would stay intact for the SuperRam.

Am I right?

Also, how would my 3.27 9 Bolt hold up to the estimated 420 or so horse from the crate? I'm assuming roughly 340 or so at the rear...

If those heads are the vortec aluminum fast burns, they are drilled to accept vortec style or standard style intake manifolds. You should plan on getting the vortec style manifold to take advantage of the taller intake runners though.
That engine rocks. I am building one right now (albeit for a TBI).

Also meant to add, it is just a standard small block configuration. Nothing fancy except for the stroke and heads. You will need to verify the flexplate balance- not sure if it is 400 or 350.

Thanks for the info...so, basically your sayin', the heads could be considered "Vortec" in terms of the bolt configuration, etc.? If I used the SDPC Baseplate, then bolted up a SuperRam (w/ minor mods), it should work fine?

Does that come w/ a flexplate? What would the diff. be from a 350-400, as you mentioned? Would I need to do anything diff. in that respect?

You could also use a miniram Vortec intake by TPIS or the new Holley Stealthram that is coming out in Januray for Vortec's. Both would be a much better intake setup then using the Vortec base and superram.

Yes- the heads use the vortec bolt pattern.
Not sure on the baseplate as I use TBI.
Not sure if it comes with a flexplate or not, I would verify that with the distributor. If it does come with a flexplate, it likely would not be a problem for you as long as the converter bolts up.
I am in a different situation, as I used a rotating assembly with a 400 balancer and a 350 flywheel to be used with a T56 trans.
I would contact the seller and see what they have to say.

burnout88: I would consider those intakes as well, but unfortunately, I have to deal w/ emissions (sniffer), and most likely wouldn't pass w/ either of those...

swerve-driver: So, just contact SDPC and see what would be needed to bolt up to a suped up 700R4? (in terms of flexplate, etc.)

Your in IL, they do not do a visual inspection on emissions, and as long as you have a good set of cat's on the car and the correct computer tune you should pass just fine. They only care about what is coming out of the tailpipe and that you have no check engine lights present. I would actually recommend a dyno tune if you are trying to pass emissions especially since the IL emissions test is bascially just a big dyno machine.

Also, if you decide to keep the superram and Vortec tpi base, I would recommend you at least have the Vortec tpi base ported. That base does not flow much better than a stock base.

burnout88: Sounds very promising about the emissions...I just passed emissions, and they told me my rims were too wide for their dyno, so, all they did was an "idle" test...lol, maybe even MORE promising...

As far as the StealthRam that's coming out for Vortecs...don't they flow way past 6k? That crate looks like all of it's juice is around 4500-6000k...would the Stealth actually HURT performance in that aspect, or would it just flow more at those revs, and also more for any future plans? I'm just trying to not get anything overkill, but want the max amount of performance for the money.

Keep in mind, this is only a street car, and rarely, if anytime, will see track use. I'm trying to get 300rwhp, if not a little more...hang and kill ricers/ls1's, etc.
