‘87 5.0/5MT - Rapid clicking when starting, no crank
Hopefully the video attaches. A mechanic friend says this could be simply the battery. What are your thoughts?
Haven’t had time to get a battery and hesitant to spend that much money at the moment. Will update if that’s the fix though.

from my personal experience it sounds like you battery is dead. if it is dead there might be other issues draining the battery. if you want to test if the battery is old and worn out the best way I have been taught is to jumpstart the car and disconnect the terminals. if it dies right away then it could be the alternator if it runs its a good bet its the battery is toast. thats just my two cents

Yup; dead battery is one possible cause.
A bad connection, usually in the main batt cables, is another. Could be bad connections where the cables connect to the batt, loose hardware at the other end of the cables (starter for the red, block for the black), or even internal failure in the cable where the connector isn't connected to the wire properly anymore. Could be corrosion. A bad connection inside the batt can cause this: a batt has 6 cells, in series, with a connection from each to the next, and they can all fail. So that's a bad batt due to a bad connection.
I'd suggest starting by checking all the connections. Cleaning and tightening are free, or pretty close to it. Use hot water and baking soda to clean the batt terminals. Then check the fluid in the batt; if it's low, fill with distilled water. NOT tap water, NOT RO filtered water, NOT bottled drinking water: DISTILLED WATER ONLY. That'll cost like $1 for a gallon, but then you can use it in your radiator, which also needs PURE water. Then and only then, start worrying about buying stuff. (unless of course you find a bad batt cable end and have to replace it, or some such)

Pull the headlights on, try the starter. If the lights go out you probably have a shot or discharged battery.

battery sits at 12.3V resting, I haven’t had an assistant yet to help me check it under load. I did see some pretty bad corrosion on the negative terminal last time I went out to check on it, so that also makes me think battery.
