Dash light dinner function?

I’m working on my first third gen, and after a LOT of troubleshooting, cleanup, new bulbs and a new headlight switch, I have all the lights working as factory new.

However, the gauge cluster dimmer seems weird to me. Turning the **** (full counter clockwise) until it clicks is full brightness, and then they dim as you rotate clockwise.

This seems backwards to me. Is it the same on your cars? Full CCW is brightest, and full CW is dimmest.

If it gets brighter, then the interior lights turn on when it "clicks", then it's working right. Regardless of your opinion re. "seems".

Now if the dash lights dim as you turn it, then when you reach the extreme it "clicks" and the interior lights turn on, you've got a genuine complaint.

Which is it?

Ah, thank you. I didn’t realize the “click” was supposed to turn on the interior lights. There’s still a gremlin in that circuit so I have the fuse pulled from that at the moment.

I’ll get the CTSY fuse back in and test next time I’m at the car.

I’m gonna stick with my opinion that it seems odd that rotating the volume ****, the fan controls and pretty much any rotary switch I’ve ever used, clockwise means up/more. I’m wondering if I got some oddball switch from Amazon or if GM decided the opposite on the cluster brightness control.

Correct headlight switch operation:

Full CCW after click = full cluster brightness and courtesy lights on
Full CCW before click = full cluster brightness
Full CCW before click to CW = variable cluster brightness, bright to dim
Full CW = cluster off; headlight on warning off

Ok, that is exactly how mine is working. Thank you for the detailed answer!

Re: Dash light dinner function?

I don't have a lighting "dinner" function in either of my TAs.

No matter what the mood, what's on the menu, or how good my wife looks serving it up, I don't eat in any of my cars.

Water only.......
