Wiring aftermarket gauges
I finally get fed up with my stock gauges that either are inaccurate or don't work at all. I bought a 6 gauge set from New Vintage USA mainly due to the more concise wiring. After studying the instructions and disassembling the stock cluster I have a pretty good grasp on what gets wired into where with just a few questions.
1. Can or should I reuse the stock speed sensor or replace the cable with an aftermarket electric one? If so which one would you suggest?
2. Can the factory pins be removed from the plastic or does it have to be cut from behind it? Mainly if it can be removed it will give me a bit more room to work while keeping the rest of the pins in order. The wiring is really short behind the cluster and would be tough to work with.
3. Any other suggestions for those that have done it before?
Im excited to get this done as I've owned the care for 26 years and the gauges have always been kinda flaky since I bought her. Thanks in advance!!

OK after messing with it a bit I'm guessing I will have to cut the wires off the back of the harness as it doesn't look like I can pull the pins out from the back. I'm really hesitant to do this as there's no going back lol. Is there a pinout for the gauge cluster harness? I can only find one on Austin thirdgen for 1991-1992, not my 1984.

Also, is there an adapter that converts the cable driven speedo signal to an electronic signal for our cars? I see several but they are threaded and mine is a push on style.

You can get the terminals out of the connector for the dash cluster, but you'll have to cut the terminals off anyway to connect to the new gauges.
There are several types of cable driven VSS's. Auto meter has one, Dakota Digital. You could also go with one of the GPS based VSS's by both of those companies

Thanks for the reply. I've looked at several of the senders but all of the GM ones were threaded and all of the Ford ones were push on. Is there one that can be attached at the end of the cable behind the dash?

OK I've decided to instead of hacking up the factory wiring I'm going to buy a harness to plug into what is there. It's a bit pricey but it should make my project much easier and cleaner.
Secondly I think I'm going the replace the cable with this to get the signal to the tach.
Hopefully this should work and get the new gauges in my car, finally!
