2 wire alternator to 3 wire alternator

Hey everyone. Hoping someone can help. I had a v6 and I am dropping in my carbed v8. But the v6 had the alternator with a 2 prong connector and my v8 has the alternator with a 3 wire connector from i believe a 92 camaro. Does anyone know how I can hook up this alternator since my wiring harness only has the 2 wires? Thanks for the help!

You can get a conversion adapter, or make your own.
You will need a pigtail that fits the new alternator.

Haha thank you so much i actually just found this adapter like an hour ago. This will make it much easier. Do you know if i buy this adapter what do I do with the wire from the original harness. One wire runs from firewall to connector then the other wire goes from the connector to an eyelet that mounts to the bolt on the back of the alternator. Do i still need to bolt it to that location. Or just leave it disconnected

View the photos in the HotRod article. They show everything.

Re: 2 wire alternator to 3 wire alternator

Bumping this older thread as I'm scratching my head!

Anyone have the schematic for going SI to CS? That diagram is confusing and the HR article just says to buy an adapter or make your own... with no mention of HOW.

I have the 3 pin alt I'm trying to install in my 83 with the 2 pin plug.

I did see they make adapters, but don't see the point in buying one when all I need to do is cut my 2 pin plug off & wire it on to the new alt pigtail.

When looking at the adapters I also see they offer with and without warning light. Does that mean if you DON'T have a voltage gauge and just have an idiot light dash? I assume that'd make a difference in how it's wired up?

Re: 2 wire alternator to 3 wire alternator

Sorta. I ordered the adapter WITH the resistor though not sure if that was the right move or not. I'll know soon when the motor runs.

Re: 2 wire alternator to 3 wire alternator

Thanks, I appreciate it. This swap is taking me forever, keep hitting dumb road blocks like this.

So have you converted? Did you use a resistor? Do you have a gauge or just warning lights?

Re: 2 wire alternator to 3 wire alternator

I am not a fan of the single wire alt. I upgraded to a 140 amp with the oem blade connection. I like to see my gauge working and didn't want another electrical hassle like I had with the crossfire ignition.
