AD244 Alternator Upgrade Resistor Question

So I just broke my 3rd CS144 Caprice alternator bracket and upgraded using a Duralast Gold AD244 Alternator part number DLG1923-16-4. I installed it and wired it using the thread below. My only question is, I did not use a resistor inline with the exciter wire from the old harness. Is there any reason I need to put one there? If so what size? What would happen if I didn't?

So far ive driven about 35 miles without a resistor and havent had an issue.

Used this as a guide

Re: AD244 Alternator Upgrade Resistor Question

When I installed my AD244, I researched the resistor question until my eyes bled, with no clear answer. I decided to play it safe and installed a resistor. On the other hand, the shop where I bought my AD244 said it would work just fine with no resistor. I never tried it without the resistor....

Re: AD244 Alternator Upgrade Resistor Question

Should I use a resistor? My new alternator did not come with one.

Re: AD244 Alternator Upgrade Resistor Question

I would suggest that you run it.

While I'm not an electronic engineer by training (only a mathematician and physicist) but only by trade, I've LONG SINCE learned, that lots of things are there for "edge cases"... things that only happen once in a blue moon, or less, but whenever they do, it could be the difference between life and death. (not to be too dramatic or anything, but I live in a human life safety industry within the medical space nowadays)

Kinda like what happens to the passengers in your car when you have a wreck... would you like your 3-yr-old kid to survive? well then, there might be certain things you might do or NOT do when "modifying" your car, to minimize risk to her/him. Like, you might use foam rated to not emit toxic chemicals when burning, rather than "easy" spray can foam. Stuff like that.

Lots of times things like that resistor are like that. Sure, might not be as important as your kid, but it'll be something like, what happens when the batt cable shorts while the car is running? the resistor might limit the excitation current tot he alt, which would keep it from bursting into flame. Not saying it's definitely that, but don't overlook the possibility. Not something that would "matter" day to day, or that would affect how it "works", but might only be a factor in a dire emergency.

Run it if at all possible.

So this is what the company gave me with the alternator. I have no idea what that blue cable is even for. I’m not very good with electrical. Mechanically I’m pretty good, wires not my thing lol. But anyways it’s a plug, that looks gets plugged in from the original alternator plug.

I put the 470 ohm resistor in, looking at my old thread...

Basically followed Den11's thread. Had to elongate the hole as he described, and put in the 470 ohm resistor as well.

Also this is how they have it wired. As you can see they have the yellow, blue, and green wire all spliced together. The others are cut and not connected. Does that blue wire go behind the alternator where the battery plugs into?

We ended up running the resistor from the date of this thread. 4 years later and no problems.

For further info, this is the exact alternator i used. If you need, i can go look at my harness. I used a replacement connector for the new alternator from autozone and spliced directly into my factory stuff. Had no intentions on returning to the stock stuff.
