Re: push button start!!??

I suggest fixing the "sometimes ignition trouble" first. That way any issues with the push button conversion are known to be issues with the push button... not maybe something else.

The actual electrical ignition switch that the key activates is on the top of the steering column, under the dash. Remove the hush panel, the dash trim below the column, then the two nuts holding the column up. The switch position can be adjusted, so it could be as simple as that.

What are your sometimes ignition problem symptoms? Cranking? firing? Only when hot? Only when cold? After its been sitting for a week? Is it a weak battery? A weak starter?

Re: push button start!!??

hey mojoe, thanks for the reply! it only does it every now a then, don't matter if its cold or hot, just happens sometimes when I crank it there's nothing, but I have power to everything else, and if I keep picking with it, it will crank fine, what are your thoughts?

Re: push button start!!??

Sounds like it needs a starter.

Check for 12V at the solenoid when trying to crank it but it doesn't. If it's there, you need a starter.

Very common wear-out defect with the old Delco direct-drive Stone Age POS starter.

The ABSOLUTE LAST THING your car needs from you, is you hacking on its wiring.

Re: push button start!!??

It's a brand new starter, I really think it's something to do with the ignition switch on the column, that's why I would like to have the pus button start

Push This ! ! ! ! !

You will benefit from a PB start due to the fact the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid is not as thick as it should be.

Drivers have thrown batteries and starters at their cars and it does temporarily fix the problem.

Then when the edge wears off the new parts, starting becomes intermittent again.

With a PB start wired with HEAVY wiring, never again will you hear the chatter of a solenoid from a borderline battery.

The starter will turn the engine, slowly borderline battery, but will keep trying until the battery truly is discharged.

No time here to draw a diagram however use a toggle switch to connect the RUN wire in the steering column to power, then connect a PB to a 70 amp relay, then have the relay connect power from the battery to the solenoid.

Use 6 AWG or thicker for the power side of the relay.

Happy Racing !
