wiring problems including all markers dash lights and plate lights

Hello third gen community,
I have a question that I need to ask all of you in the hopes that you can help me so that my car can be able to be put on the road. I believe I have come close to narrowing down the problem but am not sure. my taillights, front marker lights, dash lights, and license plate lights do not work when the headlight switch is in either the parking light or headlight position the fuse blows every time it is put in this position so I believe it has to be a short in the taillight wiring. I used an ohm meter to test for high resistance due to a broken wire or a short, when testing i found two wires under the dash the same color as the taillight wire(brown) one had 7 ohms of resistance and the other 485 or so ohms by hooking one side right to the wire right at the switch and one below the dash so i have to imagine the high resistance has to be coming from somewhere between the two test leads and that it would be the wire with the high resistance? But how does one wire switch to two in these cars to power two different things and does anyone know where this split is located I would greatly appreciate it because I am getting very frustrated with this problem and I would like the car to be able to be put on the road in the spring. Sorry for this being so long Im just trying to be as thorough as possible. Thank you in advance.

I'm working through a similar issue. I'm on my phone so I don't know how to link a thread, but I found some suggestions in this area of the forms. I was driving about 100miles from home when I started blowing fuses if I turned on the parking lights or the headlights. Only my turn signals work. The headlights popped up and stay up until I replace the fuse. I would assume this to be a safety feature. I'll attach the link to the other thread a little later.

See above link.

My headlights (hi & low) work along with the blinkers. My fog lights haven't worked in awhile, but the dash indicator does, so I think they're just burned out. My break lights, emergency flashers and running lights all are out as soon as I turn on the parking lights or headlights. I've had a rear side indicator light out so I've got my rear interior apart checking other bulbs and changing that one. Now I'll be checking the areas from the other thread. I've also got an information center grounding wire to fix in my dash that I am not looking forward to. I'll keep you posted.

Re: wiring problems including all markers dash lights and plate lights

Well....I finally got around to working on the car after it got nice and I wanted to drive it again. Nothing like spring to get moving on stuff that could have been done over the last 5 months. I had one of the side marker lights both fog lights burned out, changed all three bulbs, hooked up the battery and things seemed fine. Then I couldn't turn the car over and found out I had a bad cell in the battery. Got a new battery and things seem to be fine.

I took it out last night and all the lights are still working. I don't know what the cause was, but it's ok for now.

The driver side fog light had a zip tie that had heated up and burned through, and one of the wires looked a little pinched, so I wrapped it in electrical tape and put it back together. (That was the only thing that seemed out of place).

Re: wiring problems including all markers dash lights and plate lights

The issue came back again at some point and I haven't driven the car since October. I went back and checked my brake lights...When I went to pull them and check the bulbs and the sockets for resistance, in 4 out of the 6 bulbs, the glass would spin and I couldn't get them out. I had to break off the glass and use a channel lock to get the base out. Checked the sockets, they were good, put in new bulbs and right now they all work and I haven't blown a fuse. Now onto other issues.

Yup, in such situations the problem more often than not, is something to do with the bulbs...

Think about it. What is the most inherently fragile part in the whole system? What is the part most exposed to contamination and physical damage? What part gets handled the most over its life and is therefore the most subject to possible unintentional and unnoticed abuse? Not hard to see where the most likely location of a problem is going to be.
