WTF could be wrong with my rear hatch release?

So, some background.....

A local car wash slammed my hatch a decade ago and broke my hatch release. I replaced the entire unit. Oddly enough, it would only work if I held the dash button

A few years later when I was down at TDS having Lon replace my door hinges and doing an R&R on my head light motors, I threw the problem at him.

We determined the hatch was aligned correctly as was the hatch release. He tried a completely different hatch release assembly, same problem. Then we even tried a different dash button, same problem. He said at that point he had no clue so I left it at that.

Now like 4 years later I really want to fix this bitch lol.

Everything seems aligned, the hatch release is not broken and is working as it should. However ONLY if I hold down on the dash button, soon as I let go of the dash button, the motor stops going up or down. If I hold it, it lifts up, releases, and will go back down just fine. If I don't let go of the button when it gets down all the way, it will start going back up again, this is also annoying.

It seems to me there is some sort of relay/timer or something that may be involved.

Anyone ever encounter this?

Do you latch it then hold it to go down as well? Or does it go down on its own.

Cargo "lid" fuse blown? Lamp comes on?

The switch is wired to the motor so it should continually go up and down if you held it based on the changing of the position switches. Normally this is fed by the lid fuse and stops on the position and latch positions.

Re: WTF could be wrong with my rear hatch release?

Good questions, good questions!

Yes, when I close the hatch I have to slightly press down for it to latch into place but the motor does not automatically go down. I then must hold the switch while the motor lowers to just the right spot then let go of it before it starts going back up again.

The lamp does indeed come on, however only once it's raised to the height where the hatch is released. The light clicks on the instant the hatch releases.

I'll double check my fuses...

There's 3 grounds there too, make sure they are all connected.

What the I only remember one ground that was on the original I put in the exact same place when I installed the replacement.

I'll get out in the garage and take another look in about an hr or 2, I'm way too hung over right now

Thanks for help!

On another note, your 92 GTA is my 2nd favorite color next to mine, heck maybe even my favorite! I'm gonna search your posts for pics you have uploaded!

Re: WTF could be wrong with my rear hatch release?

Sorry might beonly one ground on the 91-92. i just redid the 89 so was thinking tha.

If you have a multimeter check the continuity between the red/white wire from the light to the relay. There will be two red/white wires, ones the feed from the fuse, the other goes to the common connection on the relay.

Your essentially powering that wire when holding the switch. I suspect maybe it might be broken at one of the connections. Electrically it's the only thing I can see with the diagram and you symptoms.

Re: WTF could be wrong with my rear hatch release?

I realigned my hatch and installed new struts, pretty cool to see it lift up by its self lol.

I removed the plastic from around the hatch release mechanism for another look. Now the light doesn't even go on when it release, perhaps it's burned out. I still need to check the fuse, it's too dark now. I'll need to dig for my multi-meter too.

I did notice on the drivers side, there is a small relay with GM P/N 12065125 on it. The wires from the light and light mechanism go thru it I think.

I'll check the fuse tomorrow (any idea which fuse it is?) and find my multi-meter. Perhaps that relay is toast.

Thanks for the help so far! The ground appears to be fine, otherwise I don't think the motor would go up at all when holding the dash button in.

If the relay was bad it wouldn't move at all when you pushed the button.

If the lights out too its likely the fuse. Fuse is labeled lid, 10a I think is red.

Re: WTF could be wrong with my rear hatch release?

Yeah I feel like a total flippin idiot! I could swear the light was coming on before too...

So I find that a 15amp fuse is just straight missing in the slot called "LID" just like you said. I went to the auto parts store this morning and bought an assortment. Inserted the fuse, whamo, works great.

It must have fallen out at some point and I never noticed. It wasn't under the floor mat or seat that I could find. Oh well.

Now if only I could delete this thread so I don't feel so embarrassed haha!

Thanks for the help!
