Wire mix up
Okay guys I just completed my 1991 v6 to 350 carb swap. Motor starts up, but not with the key. The key only turns on acc. And fuel pump and to shut the engine down I have to pull the pos off the battery. Any tips for how to fix that, I'm not running a emc.
I built my own harness. And I'll write up how I have it and maybe you can tell me if I have it somewhat correct.
From battery to junction block
Thick red wire from Junction block to "2plug" alternator(1.brwn Going to gauge 2. Blk Ground!)
Red hot wire from junction block to driver side wire block
Starter "purple" to driver side wire block
Thick pink wire for distributor
White wire for tach
Temp green to driver side wire block
Another red hot wire to red wire on driver side wire block for accessories
Black wires grounded to block
Grey wire fuel pump

Re: Wire mix up
First, don't ever pull the positive cable off the battery first. That's a good way to "light up your life" in the wrong way. Always disconnect the negative first. Second, when you say "drivers side block" are you referring to the C100 bulkhead connector? Third, do you have the bare braided wire ground strap connected from the engine to the frame rail? Fourth, are you getting +12v to the purple wire when you turn the key to start? Fifth, your car come with the chip in the key(VATS) If you didn't bypass it, then the car won't start with the key. ESPECIALLY if you removed the ECM.

Re: Wire mix up
Yes the c100 bulkhead is what I mean. And yes ground strap is connected . Ands as far as the purple starter wire is not getting power unless it's from my engine bay push button. And yes it has vats and as far as being disabled I did the starter bypass for it and the fuss for it is pulled

Re: Wire mix up
How did you bypass the VATS? The usual bypass is to install a resistor that matches your key in the VATS wires under the dash, but that still requires the ECM to be connected for it to work. Since you removed the ECM, you'll have to bypass the starter enable relay.

Re: Wire mix up
How ?
You say it won't crank over from the key so obviously you are not getting power from the Ign switch to the starter
so check for power in the START position at your relay bypass and the NSS switch
If none check for power on the yellow out of the Ign switch in START.

Re: Wire mix up
There is a thread on here that explains how to do it.
Okay and I'll check that as well.
Also when I turn the key to the "on" position the pink wire for the distributor gets power, when I turn it "off" it looses power as it should (this is without the motor running). I haven't tested it yet but I'm thinking also something is still feeding the distributor power even when I turn the key to the off position when the motor is running.
Idk if that helps any but I will check the ignition when I get off tomorrow
