Separation Anxiety - Engine Harness Removal Questions

I am building a 383 for my '89 Camaro to replace my 305 TPI (spun the mains ). I intend to replace the TPI with a complete fuel injection system (probably from Holley) and want to know whether or not I can pull my engine harness and ECM without losing various connectors I still intend to keep/use? Like my ALT, A/C, wiper motor, cooling fan, Temp sensor connectors, etc... I see a lot of people selling their TPI complete with the ECM and harness, but I don't want to end up selling it to make a little money now just to spend a lot more money later replacing connectors that I might lose if I sell the harness. When you guys sell a TPI harness, does that harness go to everything but the lights, or is it just an injector harness or what all is on the harness? I did find another thread that said the light harness is separate from the engine harness, so I don't think I have to worry about that. I checked a wiring schematic for my car/engine combination, but it doesn't show any passthrough connectors between the ECM and the engine (and I know the ECM is in the dash) so I can't trust my schematic to be accurate on that. Also, I realize that if I just went out to my car and pulled the harness out I'd probably realize the answer to my own question, but it's mid teens outside and my car has a cover and snow all over it; so conditions are less than ideal for me to go find this answer on my own any time soon.

Re: Separation Anxiety - Engine Harness Removal Questions

Engine harness is seperate from the headlight harness but the engine side has the wiper wiring as well. if you pull the harness the connectors are on it for the complete tpi set up. if you intend to keep some if the connectors then you might as well keep the harness as you cant really sell a hacked up harness. the engine harness is connected at the c100 on the firewal on the driver side and then it passes thru the body under the fender behind the passenger side kick panel

Re: Separation Anxiety - Engine Harness Removal Questions

The EFI harness is fully integrated into the main engine harness, so removing just the EFI side to replace with a different control system will require cutting the stock harness apart. IMHO, its better to start with a cheap V6/TBI harness (you need to keep it 89)

Great write up Pocket!! Thanks for linking here, I promise I did do a search, but missed this one somehow. This will help me make some money on my TPI setup and not worry about losing the other stuff.

Re: Separation Anxiety - Engine Harness Removal Questions

Since the car is already TPI (multiport fuel injection), you will be money ahead to reuse as many factory parts as you can... ECM, wiring, sensors, throttle body, etc.

Injectors will most likely need to be replaced with larger ones to match the increased displacement and HP. Stock, the 305 got 19#, 350 got 22#, and the 383 will be happy with 24#-30# depending on HP level. Southbay is a sponsor and has a lot of good feedback here on TGO.

And a popular swap here is to replace the TPI manifold (plenum, runners and intake) with a Holley Stealth Ram. Search for HSR, which is technically now WSR with Weiand's name on it. You will also need fuel rails and regulator.

Finally, a PROM re-programmed for the larger injectors and the different intake.
