name this part!

Hey guys. Need to know the name of this part and its function. It has 3 wires coming from it. Green. Green/white. Brown. From what I see the solid green runs to inst lps fuse and green white and brown to the dimmer switch. Re placing this part could solve my no gauge lights problem. Thanks.

Re: name this part!

Remote dimmer switch for the instrument lights. Mine went out a while back. You can jump it if you connect the green/white to the green wire IIRC. If the lights work after you jump it, then it is the dimmer.

Thanks man. I'll give that a go. Since my post here I actually found it by googling the dimmer switch. Since I have seen this mentioned but not named in other threads I hope this will help others. Also the AC Delco pt # is D1509B.

Re: name this part!

Would it be safe to leave these wires bridged? I don't really see the purpose of the dimmer switch anyway...

Re: name this part!

ok so I should've posted this a while ago but I only just got around to ordering the new part.
The day I jumped the wires as described above, when I turned the lights on that night, smoke started to come out from around the headlight/dimmer switch area, then the dash lights went out. No fuses are blown. I just received the new dimmer switch component that is pictured in my first post, hooked it up and still no dash lights.
Any ideas what might've happened when I saw the smoke?

Re: name this part!

If you still have the old bulbs in your dash lights could of burnt out? Hopefully nothing worse though, here's hoping!

Nah they light up if you connect the green/ white wire at the dimmer wheel to a constant power source

No it didn't come with dimmer wheel but I opened it and there's nothing inside that looks like it could burn out

Re: name this part!

did you check the power coming from the headlight switch and the manual dimmer to the auto dimmer? if your lights are lighting when you hot wire them, it is not getting power from its power source, i would start from the auto dimmer and see where the last place you have power going in the direction of the auto dimmer is, and that should tell you what you need to replace

Re: name this part!

Going to see an auto electrician, don't know when but I've had enough trying to do it myself. When I get it sorted I will actually post what the issue was so this thread can help others, as it seems like this happens to most late 3rd gen T/A's.

Re: name this part!

look at the schismatics for the instrument light and check all your connections you might have shorted something out not sure what did happen but its really helpful to know where the wires go and you can locate the problem in no time!!!
