Car: 1986 Berlinetta Camaro
Engine: 350 SWAP
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: Stock
1986 Camaro Fan Keeps blowing fuse
About a month or two ago my camaro fan stopped working and come to find out it was just ta blown fuse. So I replaced it and it blew it again, replaced blew again but on the third time it worked fine.
So now fast forward, it keeps blowing the fuses again. What could be the problem? I unplugged the fan just to see if its a possibility that the motor just is dragging or something, nope. When I press my ac button(how i turn the fan on) I hear this strange noise and, pop goes the fuse.
So with the fan disconnected it still pops the fuse...what gives?

Check blower resistor. Should be a four wire plug close to blower motor under hood.

Unbolt the resistor and look for broken, melted wires. Good idea to replace resistor or fan motor when replacing the other. Could just unplug it then see if it still blows fuse.
Just read you're turning on A/C. Try unpluging A/C relay as well.

The blower resistor should be in the air box under the hood close to the blower motor. The high speed blower relay is located in the same area. The A/C relay is on the drivers side under the hood on or near the firewall. This is where mine are, it's a 84 carbed wiring harness. A/C relay may be somewhere else on your car but the resistor and high speed blower relay location should be the same on all.
Your sig says engine swap, any chance of melted by headers or pinched in bell housing wires?

Everything seems normal, a few unused loose wires may be melted some but that's all I've been. I'll take pictures tomorrow maybe that will help.

Not bell housing wires LOL. Guess I should have worded that differently. I meant is there a chance that some wires got caught between the bell housing and the block when the engine was installed. Could have taken a while to get mashed to the point of making contact with a ground (engine block). Also read somewhere that later models may have had a low speed blower relay as well. I'm still thinking it could be the blower resistor. Maybe someone could post a pic of it and where it's located. It has some resistor coils in it that burn out.

I'm going to go ahead and wire up a toggle switch so I can get to school and back and I keep looking for the problem.
Yeah I have you now on that but the wire is pretty much fine, I'm positive nothing was pinched in there because there were three of us on it when we installed it.

The reason I keep bring up that resistor is that power goes through that before it goes to the blower motor. It should be very close to the blower motor. Just unplug it then see what happens. Your blower probably won't work with it unpluged, high speed should (I believe) still work as the high speed relay controls that speed of the fan.

So what is this? When I unplugged it the fuse doesn't blow but when I plug it back in and press "a/c" it blows.
So would this be my problem? I'm only going to assume its the a/c control relay

And will a bad fan motor short out a relay? Or has what I explain just an old worn out relay?

Sounds like you found it. That' is a relay just not sure which one. Cooling fan relay looks just like the A/C relay. One has one less wire IIRC. A/C relay turns on cooling fan relay so it could be either one. If you cooling fan has been working then it's probably the A/C relay. Like others posted check and clean those connectors.

This is a very old post, though I wanted to say it helped me (hopefully) fix the problem i am having in my 85 z-28. The radiator fan will not turn on, with the AC on or not. Hopefully, this part will put things back to right. I have suspected this was causing problems in the past (wires exposed to it, wrapped electrical tape around them as they were touching each other causing the fan to turn on). Anyway, thanks to those of you who posted on this.
