Interior lights with door open

In our cars, when you open the passenger door do the interior lights go on? Or is it only suppossed to happen when you open the drivers side door?

Re: Interior lights with door open

Both doors should have the push button switch in the front of the door jamb. The switches, when door is opened, extend outward, which switches on a GROUND connection to the interior lights that already have pos power to them, lights switch on. When door closed, pin pushed inwards, ground connection lost, no lights.

Re: Interior lights with door open

Have any idea what might've made my passenger side door stop triggering the switch? Is there a seperate fuse for that side or something. My passenger side door doesn't trigger the lights anymore but my drivers side does. This started happening right after I was playing with the interior light dimmer switch

The door switch grounds the circuit to turn on the light. Sometime it gets some corrosion on it and it can be as simple as twisting it back and forth a little to clean it. Otherwise you'll need to check the wire continuity and figure out if you disturbed a wire playing with the dimmer switch.

Re: Interior lights with door open

I have the same problem on my 74 camaro, in my case the switch is slightly damaged and as such the spring inside has lost most of its pressure. If I pull the pin out, it works, but close the door and re-open it, it can't pull out on it's own far enough to make contact to ground.

Re: Interior lights with door open

For whatever reason, it started behaving perfectly normal again. So I won't be complaining anymore. I guess manually turning on and off the interior lights with the door already opened tripped a ground or something of that nature. No idea.

Re: Interior lights with door open

Replace the door switch. They are cheap, less than $10, because it will stop again. We are dealing with 20+ year old cars, these switches wear over time, especially in cold climates.

Yea. That's probably some good advice. So many things break unplanned. Yet it's always worth it to own a thirdgen!

Re: Interior lights with door open

Raised from the dead thread, but wondering if anyone has a good part number for the switch? The one at my local O'Reilly's doesn't appear to match the switch in my jamb. I'm assuming they are pretty much universal to the third gen and not year/make/model specific?

Re: Interior lights with door open

I got the switches from classic industries. They have a plastic cap on the end so it doesn't scratch the door and look really good. They are like 9 buck a piece, and well worth it. One thing though, the drivers door has two grounding prongs one is for the key in ignition signal the other is for the interior lights. The classic ones have only one prong. For me it didn't matter because I upgraded my body wiring to a chasis brain box from a 4th gen car. It only needs one prong for me.

Hi lasher_350,

We have several door jamb switches available in both single terminal and/or double terminal versions. They are available with metal button where it contacts the door or plastic button. See images and part numbers below.

Is this what you were searching for?

SW90 = 2 terminal, metal button
SW98= 1 terminal, metal button

SW104 = 2 terminal, plastic button
SW103= 1 terminal, plastic button

Re: Interior lights with door open

Thank you guys so much for answering! I picked up a BWD unit I believe, from my local O'Reilly's, and the difference is that the shaft is wrapped with black foam, which I thought would hinder the door closing, but once installed, it works like a charm. It indeed was a 2 prong switch, however on the old one, one entire terminal had broken off and was hanging behind the panel. Everything is hooked up and working as GM intended it now. I've had the car for 5+ years and have never had the interior lights come on when opening the driver door. Now it's like an awesome new toy! I am now starting the LED upgrade! Love it!!

thanks again, guys!
