side marker lights not working (different)

Hi,
In the process of resurrecting a 91 firebird and this one stumped me. The front side marker lights do not work. I replaced the bulbs. I double checked and park and turn signals work in the front (and rear). I checked power and continuity based on wiring diagram I have. Every thing seems good. What the diagram shows is that on wire goes to the pos side of turn signal and other goes to pos side of park light. Both show to be good. I do not understand how this is supposed to work both wires of the 194 bulb hooked to a hot wire. I presume that it is supposed to be on with the park lights but be overridden by turn signal when they are on also. Any ideas why they do not work and what else is to be checked?

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

Don't know if yours is wired the same as mine or if this will even help BUT,My turn signal and parking lights worked but my front side markers didn't along with a bunch of other stuff. It turned out a shorted lighter blew a fuse that also was related to power mirrors, door locks, horn, dome light, etc. When I fixed it and replaced the fuse, all that stuff plus the side markers now worked! Check all your fuses. Might do it?

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

I agree with you it doesn't make sense but will try it. I already think that the horn acc fuse may be blown but was working on one thing at a time. This is a $600 car bought with over $1000 worth of spare parts including a 82-84 trans am hood w/ working ram air setup, bumpers, lights, plastics, consoles, shifters etc. The motor is supposed to run but apparently the security system is bad. I will be ordering a bypass very soon. V6, T Top, Fog Lights, Ground Effects, and fender vents. All but the fender vents is known to be iriginal.
The last owners messed this car up big time but I am fixing it one feature at a time.
Once again thanks for the tip. I hope it works.

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

If all that other stuff doesn't work and you find the blown fuse and it immediately blows again, I have a likely solution. If tye VATS security system is causing a no-start problem there's a cheap and easy fix you can find in the technical articles section. It's a pretty common problem. You've come to the right place for help, lots of great help from folks that know amazing amounts about these cars. Have fun!

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

Thanks for the info. I do know about the resistor being put inline but have reason to believe the module may have been replaced. There was a second one on the floorboards. The neutral Safety Switch was improperly replaced also so who knows.

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

I finally had the chance to check the horn, acc fuse. It was blown and fixed my horn and somewhat fixed the doorlocks. They want to work now so that is close. Actuators and probably some lube should fix them. However that still did not fix the front side marker lights. The vats bypass module is on its way. Should have by Fri. Is there any other suggestions anybody would want to float by me? I am grasping at straws here? Please anybody?

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

Yeah, lots of people say they have to hit the door lock button several times to make it work. I've read a bunch of threads about fixing that I think on the interior forum or here under electronics. Do a search and you'll find lots of stuff. Mostly cleaning and lubing. Have fun

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

Thanks for any and all suggestions given to me. I finally found the problem. The contacts inside the socket were bent and only made contact just as starting to push the bulb in. I cleaned and rebent and now they work. The right side will need a new socket though. The light still goes out with a slight wiggle. Now brake lights and motor running and it will be ready for inspection. I will do other work first but it would pass.

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

The same socket is used in the console, in taillights, and tons of GM cars, trucks, and vans. Any trip ti the JY should provide you with plenty of sockets, or they are easy to pick up at part stores as well. Sounds like things are coming together, cool!

Re: side marker lights not working (different)

I am working on restoring my 1991 Z28. I have installed led bulbs throughout the vehicle. I have installed electronic flashers for blinkers and hazards. All lights work as intended except the front side markers. Bulbs and sockets are fine as I can wire them up to the front blinker/parking lights to either be on constant or act as a blinker (blue wire of side marker to blue or brown wire [depending if I want constant or blink] of blinker/parking and brown wire of side marker to black of blinker/parking). It has to be a ground issue with the bulb not being grounded to operate when wired up with no ground wire. I believe I came across something somewhere that certain led bulbs work as intended and others don't. I am currently using Auxito 194 led bulbs from Amazon. Any suggestions on bulbs that work or if I should install a resistor and if so where? Thank you in advance!
