Quick VATS question

Ok so since I lost my VATS keys and they are now presumed dead I am going to bypass VATS. I searched and I found the 15 different codes ect...ect... and I need to get some resisters and solder them together.
I plan on going to radio shack tomorrow and getting a 10K pentiometer (sp?)
to find the resistance and then permanently solder some resisters under the dash. My question is since I need a new key cylinder will one from...say a 82 trans am work? I don't know if they are wired differently so I wanted to ask because I want this done tomorrow! also will I need to break the existing lock to get it in the run position or will it come out in the lock position? any help would be appreciated.

EDIT will this one work? http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...3701&ppt=C0329

Re: Quick VATS question

Do you have any key that fits the ignition switch?

If so, once you find the correct resistance, you can just have a new key cut with that pellet in it and retain the VATS and not have to change the lock. Any ACE Hardware can cut VATS keys for $25 each. Might also try the dealer - they may be able to tell you from the VIN.

Re: Quick VATS question

If you do the VATS bypass, you can just use a standard key.

But since you have no key & need a new cylinder anyways....A stealership could cut you a new key to fit your car, VATS & all. Much asier tan swapping in a new cylinder.

But will they be able to cut a key without one to copy? I lost the keys and don't have a spare but if they can magically copy a key without a key to copy...then yeah that would be nice...

Re: Quick VATS question

They can cut a key using the Vin but if the cylinder has been changed in the past with a new keyset then that will just end up wasting your money.

Ok..so I called the dealership and they said they dont have codes for the 89 "because its so damn old"...
So I went and bought a replacement ignition lock I forgot to get the tool I need to take the lock plate out though.
I am going to start looking for the potentiometer.

Re: Quick VATS question

Alright so I decided to just buy a crap load of resisters and now I got em all soldered together... I tried all of them but none of them worked...so I must be doing something wrong... any ideas?

Re: Quick VATS question

You can't just put them together at random. You have to know which specific value the VATS module it looking for & assemble resistors together, to give you tat value. Not the EXACT value, but within the range shown on the chart below. Usually done by measuring your key.

That stealership was just being lazy. They have the ability to look up your cars VATS value by using your VIN. Call a different place, if that is the route you wanna go.

Re: Quick VATS question

LOL no I didnt solder them ALL together... I made 15 strings of resisters that matched the 15 numbers. I also waited 4 minutes between key turns... after reading it I guess it was a bit misleading.

Re: Quick VATS question

Ok...so I have been thinking about what I did wrong and I thought of this...
When I was soldering the resisters I was using a digital multimeter to test the resistance. Say I solder 2 1kohm resisters together...it would give me a reading of like around 1.6k instead of 2k. should I trust the multimeter or should I trust the numbers for the resisters?

Re: Quick VATS question

Trust the multimeter. The soldered connections will affect the combined resistance. Plus the 1k rating is most likely its target, not its actual. If you measure a 1k straight out of the pack, it'll most likely range from just below 1k to just above 1k.

Yeah thats pretty consistent from what I saw today. I guess I will try again tomorrow and see what happens.

Re: Quick VATS question

If you go to digikey online ( http://www.digikey.com ), you can order a standard metal film 1% accuracy resistors. Based on the table that Stephen posted above, the 1/4 watt 1% metal film resistors come in the exact resistance value for every item in the table. (402, 523, 681, etc)

I have done this on two cars now ('89 Camaro and '92 bonneville) and have never had to solder resistors together.

1% accuracy is going to be way more accurate than you need, but they are cheap, and easy to get, and come in the value you need.

RNF1/4T1402FRCT-ND will cost you 15 cents for a quantity of 1.

Thanks for the info bro! I went to the link you gave me and tried searching for the other ones but some of the specs confused me a little bit... One question... there is an option for packaging...which one is best?

Re: Quick VATS question

What you want is to start your search with "Resistor" it take you to a page of much more than resistors.

Scroll down the list until you get to the resistors. Select Thru Hole Resistors.

At this point you want to narrow your search (the website recommends one filter at a time) -- after you select an item, select "Apply Filter" near the bottom.

1: Composition -- Metal Film
2: Case -- Axial
3: Power(Watts) -- 0.25W, 1/4W
4: Tolerance -- 1%
5: Packaging -- Cut Tape (CT)

At this point you can now select your value. A list of resistors in that specific size will now show up. Be sure to select on that you can buy in a quantity of 1.

What I do notice now that I relook, is that the "RN" type that I selected as my example does not come in all the exact sizes. Therefore you would need to select a different type (thus 29 cents apeice). For instance, 523 does not exist in the "RN" type, so you would need to get "CMF523QFCT-ND"

You probably don't need a 1/4 watt resistor either. But in order to get the values you need from Digi-Key, the 1/8 watt doesn't come in the values you need.

Here are all the part numbers for each resistor value in the table:
402 -- CMF402QFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T1402FRCT-ND
523 -- CMF523QFCT-ND
681 -- CMF681QFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T1681FRCT-ND
887 -- CMF887QFCT-ND
1130 -- CMF1.13KQFCT-ND
1470 -- CMF1.47KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T11.47KFRCT-ND
1870 -- CMF1.87KQFCT-ND
2370 -- CMF2.37KQFCT-ND
3010 -- CMF3.01KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T13.01KFRCT-ND
3740 -- CMF3.74KQFCT-ND
4750 -- CMF4.75KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T14.75KFRCT-ND
6040 -- CMF6.04KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T16.04KFRCT-ND
7500 -- CMF7.50KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T17.5KFRCT-ND
9530 -- CMF9.53KQFCT-ND or: RNF1/4T19.53KFRCT-ND
11800 - CMF11.8KQFCT-ND

Hope this helps,
Ed

I redid the chart above, to show the Digikey.com resistors with it.

so...I found my keys and I read the code and it turned out to be 11,800 so I bypassed the vats successfully.
