What is this?

What is this?
Is this a fusible link or just a 3 way splice. You can see one of the wires is broken. Thats the hot wire (orange wire) for my coolant fan relay. It would go to a one wire connector that then continues into the wiring harness. The black wire goes to an inline 20 amp fuse and then the returning wire goes to another one wire connector and then into the wiring harness.
My question is, what is that black plastic "thing" that comes of the battery cable. Is it a fusible link or just a 3 way splice?

Re: What is this?
Fusible links are just like fuses, they rarely go bad for no reason. When there's a short in a circuit protected by a fusible link, the wire and the insulation go up in smoke. Sometimes they just look like they rotted and corroded away. It's possible someone just did something stupid and shorted the circuit long enough to kill the link, but it's more likely it burned up for a reason. You could try just fixing the link and see if it goes bad again. It wouldn't hurt to visually inspect the wires, cooling fan relays, the motor, etc for anything obvious.

I reconnected the wires using a butt connector (there wasn't much wire to use) And the connection burnt up after a couple minutes of starting the car. Now I don't know if it burnt up because there is a short or if its because the wire was half of its original thickness and it couldn't handle the voltage going through it.
I just did a engine swap. (swapped in an 1989 350 TPI) Everything was working fine before. The cooling fan spins, but not freely.

Re: What is this?
Can I just quick jumper the cooling fan (say to the battery) to make sure it still works?
I may or may not have made things worse. I jumped the fan to see if it worked and when I hooked it up to power all I heard was a loud click, then nothing. I hope I didn't blow anything else. The fan doesn't work when jumped, so I think I found the reason why my fusible link blew.
