Need Help with Shorting out Reverse Lights

I recently removed the steering wheel on my 91 Z28 to fix the high beam lever and the horns so I could get it inspected. This is usually a once a year project as the high beam switch slips about a month after inspection. I had to work on the horn as it was not working this time around. Anyway, this time around I rerouted the horn as the switches were brittle, fixed the high beam, and now I blow a fuse everytime I put the car in reverse (manual transmission). This fuse is the same fuse for the turn signals. The turn signals do not trip the fuse when they are used. I found diagrams for the turn signal wires (white-brake light switch, green-right rear turn signal and brake light, yellow-left turn signal and brake light, purple-turn signal flasher, brown-emergency flasher, dark blue-right front turn signal, light blue-left front turn signal, and black-horn) that attach to the left side (looking at the steering wheel from the driver's seat) of the blinker assembly. However, I do not know what the greenish and orangish wires that attach to the top right of the blinker assembly are for. These wires attach to the yellow part of the blinker assembly and have a flat, unprotected connection that faces towards the engine bay. I think the green one is for the back up lights, but I am unsure about the orange. If I could get some kind of schematic, besides the one in Chiltons, I could possibly reroute the wires. I have not noticed any knicks or cuts on the wires, so I am assuming at this time it may be a grounding issue. Also, now my steering wheel is very loose as the upper column (tilt wheel) has a lot of play in and out. I could use some help on that besides rebuilding the entire steering column. Please help! Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Back Flack

Even tho the backup lights and turn signals share a fuse, it’s probably the backup circuit causing the problem.

Unplug the connector containing the
light green wire.

The connector is located near the left quarter panel.

Now, put the trans in reverse.

If the fuse blew again the short is between the BU switch and the connector you just disconnected.

If the fuse did not blow, the short is between the connector the right BU lamp.

You can verify with a fused 12 volt source.

(Wire colors are subject to change year to year.)

Tilt-A-Whirl:

Sometimes the screws that hold the tilt mechanism loosen, sometimes the cast parts wear.

You have to open it to find out.

Happy Racing!

Re: Back Flack

Thanks for the information Back Flack. I am about to go outside and take the steering wheel off again and I will check that back up circuit. I will post once I make headway, or once I break something else ; )

Re: Back Flack

Back Flack...well I somehow found the reverse light issue. There is a silver, cylindrical Buzz Flasher relay thing located under the steering wheel column. I removed it and then plugged it back in and everything works fine...for now. I had to lower the fuse box and then follow the dark blue wire that hooks into the fuse box and the fuse for the turn signal and back up. I realized, after looking at the Chilton that the back up lights go from light green to the backup switch and then turn dark blue going to the fuse and to the turn flasher, which must be what the Buzz Flasher is I described above (I am looking at the Chilton as I type). The Buzz Flasher had a dark blue, light blue, and purple wire connected to it. According to the Chilton here, the purple wire is for the turn signal flasher. I can't find in the Chilton a light blue wire connected to the Buzz Flasher (Turn Flasher), unless it is the blue wire that goes to the backup switch. The good news it is working now. On a side note, the green wire you mentioned that I thought was the reverse wire and you thought went to the back up switch that was connected to the top right of the blinker assembly was for the door chime. I had taken the relay out awhile back because it would not stop buzzing. Well, as I followed the green wire to look for the backup switch, I noticed it was frayed. I spliced it back together and will get another door chime relay (I always forget to turn my lights off as I drive with my fog lights on during the day). Again, thank you for your help, I am off to troubleshoot the steering wheel issue.
