hatch pull down wiring

Guys, I just put a TDS overhaul kit in my 88, and I have a question pertaining to the wiring. My old switch harness and the new one are the same, but I have an "extra" wire that needs explanation. There is a single white wire with a small, "d" shaped connector that is left over on the sensing switch harness. I do not see a place for it to plug into on the car or latch mechanism. Of course, the pull down is still not working, and I haven't had time to investigate too far, yet. The pull down was semi assembled when I got the car, so anything is possible. I ordered the whole oh kit with motor, sensing switch, and relay, plus the guides of course. All parts are FIRST CLASS, and the service was great from TDS. Any help is appreciated, as I cannot find the pull down wiring schematics to trace the harness here. Thanks, Oldtimer.

The white wire was used on 1989-91 model year cars to provide ground to turn on and off the rear hatch light. In those year cars it connects to a black with orange-stripe wire. If your car is an older model you won't plug it into anything since your car uses a manual switch to turn on and off the hatch light if present.

Thank You! I couldn't tell if something was missing from the car, as the pull down was a giant mess when I got this thing. Again, the parts and service from TDS were SUPER! I will check fuses and probe wires this weekend. There can't be much else wrong, as I changed about everything. I was surprised with how much pure dirt was inside the gear case portion of the old motor. No grease left, just plenty of dirt. How about the reversing switch? I reused it, and it appears ok, but who knows? Thanks! Oldtimer.

Test the reversing switch. Take it off and turn it over. Draw a picture of a large fat "L" representing the underside of the reversing switch. Place the terminals that connect to the motor at the top, marking them L and R for left & right. Mark the terminals on right side of the L 1,2,3,4 starting at the top. The corresponding colors are BRN, OR, WH, BLUE. With the switch in the UP position (meaning as if the pull-down unit has just completed it's UP cycle, in this case since yoru testing the switch upside down to access the terminals it will be down) you should have continuity between the R & #2 or OR terminals, the L & #4 or BLUE. Flip the switch as if it were completing the down cycle. There should be continuity between the R & #4 or BLUE, L & #3 or WH terminals. If you don't get these readings replace the switch.

Update: Bad reversing switch. Thanks aplenty for the pin out on the reversing switch. I drilled out the factory rivets, cleaned the contacts, relubed them, installed screws, and retested. No more problem. The hatch works SMOOTHLY and quietly. TDS rules! Oldtimer.
