Sealed Beam Conversion

So I did a search on this and there seems to be a lot of different reactions to switching to H4 or H1 headlights... either you lovem or you hatem. Also some say they're a bitch to install and you need to add relays, etc.. while others say they're just fine - plug and play. Also alot of the search results were old, old posts from 6+ months ago (to two years!)

I just wanted to get an 'upto date' opinion on these conversions. Basically I want to buy a conversion kit, so who carrys the best products? Who is the cheapest? Ebay doesn't seem to have what I want... I found what appears to be a good web site http://lightlens.com/headlights.htm ...anyone had any experience with these guys. Reccommend someone else?

I'm thinking about two pairs of the diamond conversion lamps using H4 bulbs, but I want clear, bright, WHITE light.. not that blue crap... the blue lights are great for night vision unless its raining, then in my opinion, you may as well use a flashlight Ace Ventura style.

I'm also interested in the projector style found on that web page which I believe are for high beam only(?) Has anyone installed a projector style??

Angel eyes?? They look gimicky/fad that is going to be (or has been) short lived... opinions? Anyone have them.. do they actually do anything useful or just for looks?

Thanks for all replys!

I bought some Hella conversions. I went with Hella because at the time, they were the only ones that offered both hi/lo and hi beam conversions. They don't have the more pretty clear lens.

I was (still am) more interested in seeing the road better than looks. My plan was to use either Osram Silverstars (not Sylvania) or Phillips Vision Plus bulbs.

I've had the conversions and the Phillips bulbs for over a year now....I just need to find the time and motivation to make up a new harness, mount the relays, etc. Sorry I can't comment on performance.

Hella conversions:

Osram and Phillips bulbs (new site under construction):

The bulbs you can get on ebay, also.

Thanks for the input guys.. mabey a few more can add their input and perhaps post images? I want something that is functional and lights up the road with clear and bright white light. How it looks installed in my car, while I'd like it to look nice, I could care less... I am installing them to improve night vision - not for a show car.

I am interested in hearing some results about the projector style, how well do they work? I have a friend who changed to projectors on his Acura and while they throw great light I didn't think they were better or worse then his stock diamond cut style. The angel eyes would be neat for cruise nights providing they are excellent during day time use, but I can see getting tickets.

At this point I'm convinced that nearly anything would be better then the stock sealed beam.. but I really don't want to buy two or three aftermarket conversions before I find something I am happy with...

My experience last summer on my 91 Firebird was you HAVE to put in the relays and wiring harness. Using H4 bulbs through the existing harness will really heat up your headlight switch (gets warmer to the touch the longer you use the lights). That can't be good for the harness or the switch. The H4's just draw more current. YMMV, of course, but you asked for opinions/experience, and this is mine. I went back to the Sylvannia Silverstars.

I did the same thing you're doing. Looked at what everybody else thought, did a little homework on what it would take to install and upkeep. I just decided that Sylvania Silverstars would be good. Got both hi/lo and hi. Here's what they look like without the blackouts on...

How are the Silverstars compared to the high output H4s (say silverstar H4 bulbs)?

I'd say the sealed silverstar are about the same as the h4 silverstars... and they are the same price... so you might as well get the plug-and-play sealed version

h4 requires a conversion kit and extra wiring and such, for almost no benefit, unless you go with like 100 watt bulbs
