My 86 Firebird has a short in it. I've linked it to the interior lights (dome, map, horn, trunk release cable, etc etc) The other day I pushed the trunk release button and the parking brake light came on. It dosen't come on when I put the parking brake on though. Could these two wires (parking brake light and trunk release cable) have possibly rubbed together and have metal to metal contact shorting out my lights????? Everytime I put a fuse in it blows right away!!!

Few things:

1. Did you check connections behind the radio?
2. If the e-brake doesn't activate the BRAKE light but the release switch does, check the connector for the e-brake handle. The light only comes on when the e-brake is activated with the ignition "on", otherwise those with stickshifts would be killing their batteries all the time when parked...
3. Check the trunk light behind the rear panel. Mine was shorting out and killed about six fuses until I found out what it was.
4. Check the cig lighter for a coin or something in the bottom or for bad connections.
5. (IF YOU HAVE ONE) Check the console compartment lamp socket and connections.
6. Does the fuse blow when you put in the fuse or when you open the doors or when you turn lights/accessories on, etc?

On your car and some other models, the hatch release relay is wired to the parking brake switch. On other models it is wired into the park/neutral switch. This is a safety feature on your car to prevent the hatch from being opened unless the parking brake handle is set to the first detent. On the cars where it is wired into the park/neutral switch, the hatch won't open unless the shift lever is in the park or neutral position.

The fuse blows as soon as I put it in. I'll make sure I check those things out. Thanks for the suggestions!!!!
