Heater - SMOKE OUT

1984 Cam RS with AC & Comp Delete

The last time I took the car out this happened. I put the fan on HIGH and it made a terrible sound with stuff blowing out the vents. Kinda like fiberglass dust or something. I also noticed that I lost control of the vent selections. It always stayed on defrost. Puzzling. So I turned it off.

Then today I was driving and tried to turn the fan on first from low (I forgot about the problem) and didnt hear the fan come on. So I turned it up and instanty the car filled with smoke from the vents. I pulled over and shut the car off. After regaining consiousnous from the smoke inhalation I popped the hood and disconnected everything from the heater box. Then let the car air out. It started right up and ran fine the rest of the way home. Nothing on the engine side seems bad so it must be under the dash.

Does anyone have an idea or experince something similar?

Thanks in advance.

just take the blower motor off, connect a positive and a ground and see if it smokes. If it does you need a new one

Update!

Today I got around to pulling out the heater fan. It was PACKED with carpet underlayment/firewall padding! So what I think happened is that when I turned the fan on low there was too much resistance and that is what cooked the wire.
I then cleaned out the motor and tested it with a battery charger. It spun up, but there was a howl to it and it felt tight. I am not sure how these are supposed to feel, but I am assuming fairly free spinning.

Does anyone have an idea how that stuff could have gotten in there? Also any ideas on what wire under the dash may have gotten cooked?

Thanks alot

get a fire extinguisher........ and maybe a exterminator

Does the car sit for a long time in a quiet spot? Is everything in place? cut any holes in the firewall, floorboard etc.?
What I am getting at is, I had a friend who had two cars and his one sat for long periods of time when he turned on his blower motor he heard a racket like gravel in a blender. When he took it apart there were all these acorns and nuts in there! some critter had set up a nest. Thats might what happened to you because the blower intake goes to fresh air with a baffle. All that insulating material is in the passenger compartment side. Sounds like a little critter set up house in a F-body mobile home.
